As much as I like the idea, the age discrepancy is the only issue with that. HH Holmes was around 31-32 when those murders took place, Leo is 50. I could see him nailing the Burnham role (as it will likely hold much of the screen time/dialogue) and getting someone like Will Poulter or Nicholas Holt to take on Holmes.

I don't disagree but Scorsese just did the same thing with Leo in Killers of the Flower Moon. That character was in his 20s and very early 30s in real life. And Dinero's character in that was in his 40s in real life. I'm not so sure they care too much about age accuracy.

I suppose it depends on what Leo wants. Originally I think he was supposed to be the FBI agent in Flowers but he wanted to be the nephew.

Well, if anything, the women Holmes was targeting certainly are within Leo's preferred age range, so he'll have that down.

Now that the teams are set, it's time to start talking Super Bowl movie spots.

So far, it sounds like we can expects debuts/spots from…

- Jurassic World: Rebirth
- Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Marvel's Thunderbolts*
- Superman

… among a number of others TBA. With full teaser trailers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Jurassic World: Rebirth likely dropping the same day, seeing as the first big movie of the year - Captain America: Brave New World - releases just four days later, and the studios will want to have their materials ready for theaters then as well.

Throw in the new trailer for Sinners dropping Tuesday, and the next couple of weeks should be pretty fun, trailer-wise.

I had tickets to an early showing on Saturday, but I couldn't make it

My guess is it's way too early. Probably not until May or so. That, and I don't think I've ever seen a Super Bowl spot for a movie that releases after July.

Like a test screening?

Otherwise this movie doesn't come out until April.

Went to see the secret movie series tonight and was hoping for something like Sinners. Got Companion instead.

Not my kind of movie. Acting was solid. Glad it was five bucks. Neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

That looks intense, great cast too. Didn't know Hailee Steinfeld was in it and Delroy Lindo is fantastic in just about everything he does.

How do you get on the email list for things like this or are you in the industry somehow? I'd love to be a test screener!

Gofobo and preview free movies are the 2 big ones that I know of. They might be the same thing. I've seen a few movies on it. Sinners was the biggest movie I've had to see this early. I just couldn't make it sadly.

Two of TexAgs' most beloved actors (Kelly Marie Tran, Bowen Yang) in a movie about one of TexAgs' favorite subjects (gay marriage). If posters here have anything to say about it, this just might give Sinners (which releases the same day) a run for its money at the box office...

Cinemark has these on some Mondays, there's no pattern from what I can tell. There's also no list as far as I know. I just look at Monday movie times in the app and snag a ticket. And they're five dollars.

In LA, representatives from the various test screening companies literally stand outside of busy theaters with a little sign and a clipboard or iPad or whatever and ask you if you want to attend a future test screening, usually one scheduled for a few days later, next week, etc. They often won't tell you the title of the movie, but depending on the test screening they're recruiting for, they'll ask if you're interested in seeing "a big new sci-fi movie," "a new romantic comedy," etc. If you say yes, they'll get your email, then, at least the way it used to be, you'd get a confirmation email with a link where you officially sign up for the screening, and then sometimes they'd reveal the title at that point. Other times it's a complete mystery until you're seated in the theater and they introduce the movie.

But yeah, I'm sure if you just google movie test screening companies + your city you can find out more that way, as long as you live in a big enough city. Basically, the studios hire out these companies to conduct the screenings and process the questionnaires. Most are in LA and NY, but just so they're getting Average Joe Movie Goer opinions as well, they test in Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, etc too.

That said, it's been forever since I've been to one. When I first moved to LA, nearly two decades ago, I used to go to them all the time. And sure, they can be super cool/interesting, especially if you're chosen to be part of the smaller focus group afterward (for instance, to this day I swear my buddy and I had a part in deciding the ending of I Am Legend while participating in a smaller focus group). But the down side, for me, was that when the movie finally came out months later, I consistently found myself jealous of everyone (as in the rest of the country/world) getting to see it for the first time opening weekend, and even getting to the experience all the marketing in the lead up without knowing exactly how the movie plays out. It got to be a weird, isolating, FOMO-type feeling, and considering how much I love the communal aspect of going to the movies, I stopped going to test screenings altogether.

Which ending of I Am Legend did you advocate for?

The ending that was part of/edited into the cut we were shown was the version where Will Smith lives. Then, when the movie was over, the host lady came back out and said they were going to play us an alternate ending, so they restarted the movie a minute or so prior to where the new ending branches off, and we watched the ending where he dies.

Because my friend and I were two of the first people at the screening, they asked us if we wanted to be part of the focus group after, and we said yes. So after both endings played, they had the entire audience fill out multiple choice questionnaires, re: our thoughts on the movie as a whole. Most of the audience then left, then ten or so of us were seated in the front row of the theater. It was a small-ish screening room on the Warner Bros lot, and there were roughly eight or so Warner Bros. execs seated maybe 12-15 rows behind us, in the back row, listening to our every word.

At that point the host lady started asking our group way more specific questions than the questionnaire, about the plot/characters/etc. Whoever in the group wanted to could just raise their hand and answer each question, and it soon became clear that my friend and I were the only two out of the ten who actually worked in the industry, knew story structure, understood character arcs, etc. We weren't trying to show off or anything, they just seemed super interested in what everyone had to say, and it was fun diving into all the mechanics of the movie. And from that point on every question the lady asked of the group, she would ask the group as a whole, then, specially, ask my friend and I. It was pretty funny.

When we finally started talking about the ending, my friend and I advocated hard for the version where Will Smith dies. We explained our reasoning (the other ending was legit cheesy, Will Smith's sacrifice was way more powerful, etc) and soon we basically had the entire group agreeing with us. Then, on the way out we walked past all the WB execs, and they were all huddled up, quietly/excitedly talking to each other about everything we had all just said.

All I know is that, months later, when we all went to see the finished movie in IMAX (that was the movie the TDK Joker prologue played before, which was a massive deal so we had a whole group), my friend and I were eagerly waiting to see which ending they went with, and the ending that played wasn't the original ending - it was, of course, the ending where Will Smith died - at which point my friend and I looked over at each from a few seats apart, excitedly nodded and smiled.

Just FYI, this was shot before Jonathan Majors' criminal troubles, and then even premiered on the festival circuit to legit Oscar buzz... right before Majors' decided to beat his girlfriend/throw his career away. So the movie was then of course shelved, but a new company finally bought it and is now releasing it...
