Pat Morita was in his early 50s and looked 70. Ralph Macchio is almost 60 and looks 45.

How much do y'all think Ralph Macchio and William Zabka have made in royalties off The Karate Kid?

I wouldn't think the residuals would be that much, although with the advent of Cobra Kai I imagine that figure for the earlier KK work has increased as interest in those films was revived.

https://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/tv-actors-royalties.htm

Quote:

. . . The actual amount that a Screen Actor's Guild member makes in residuals is the result of a combination of factors, including how long production lasted, the actor's contract, and the medium -- DVD sales, cable TV, film and regular television all pay different percentages of the licensing fees. However, the one thing they all have in common is that unless the actor negotiated a healthy percentage of the gross receipts, the amount he or she will receive in residuals continues to depreciate every time the program airs. . . .
I doubt Macchio's contract was strong on this point despite him having been in some stuff before KK (e.g. The Outsiders), and Zabka was basically a no-name actor.

However both Macchio and Zabka were paid about $100k per episode (so $1 million per season) for their work in Cobra Kai according to these links:

It's kind of funny to me that Will Smith licensing the rights to the franchise as part of his efforts to launch Jaden's movie career is an integral part of how the series came to be.

https://sports.yahoo.com/smiths-connection-cobra-kai-goes-155400552.html

Edit: I really went down the rabbit hole on this one. Here is a bit player from the movie Titanic who made $30k from the flick and initially received residuals in the low thousands, and it's now about $200-$300 a year.

How often are the contracts renegotiated? I'd guess with it so so popular now both would be able to jack up their asking price pretty good. Maybe 5-6Xs what they originally were getting paid UNLESS the original contract had a clause in there controlling the salary upticks as each year goes by?

I just know that movie is on pretty much every day for the last 20 years and they get paid every time it's on.

I doubt they get much, especially Zabka, who was a complete unknown. I'm sure both will get way more off of Cobra Kai than they made with Karate Kid.

I always figured residuals were garbage unless you were near A-list going in or in a position to renegotiate once an ongoing TV show was already a hit.

Yes, but they are the definition of ongoing negotiation. They started that show on peanuts (other than Cox) and leveled up regularly to eventually become the most powerful TV actors on the planet. Much different than one KK movie.

Macchio has probably made more on Karate Kid 2 and 3 than the first one.

Both Macchio and Zabka (especially Zabka) we're probably thankful for the chance to work (on a continuation of the franchise that made them famous), be paid a million dollars to do so, and be given the platform to revitalize their careers.

I imagine Will Smith's company locked them up for as long as it could do so given the relative unbalanced bargaining power at the outset of the series. I'm also sure they'll renegotiate those terms now that the series is getting more play on Netflix, and the platform has money to burn on content like this that hits a home run for a segment of its market.

I'm kind of curious how the producers and content owners monetize this sort of direct to platform streaming work. With traditional film content you can see box office, VOD, licensing to other platforms, etc.

With television you have a contract with a network that makes its $ based on ad revenue tied to eyeballs, and then the content owners can negotiate further revenue through syndication.

Maybe the latter scenario will be how CK works, and Netflix will allow it to be shown in syndication elsewhere (I know Netflix gobbled it up from YouTube), but that hasn't been its pattern so far. It's a nuclear arms race for content.

Edit: obviously there are people here in the industry who are far better postured to speak to this, and my understanding of how these things work might be completely wrong.

Binged both seasons for the first time on Netflix over the last week or so, and it may be the nostalgia talking but I really enjoyed it.

Flipping the script on Johnny/Daniel was really clever and worked for the show early on, now we've seen Johnny's character evolve and seeing what the end of S2 sets into motion is going to be interesting. Really looking forward to S3.

I don't know the context of Daniel's "what did you think would happen" but I already hate him.

The S3 snippets look like the show is taking a darker turn. I like it!

Jon Horowitz one of the creators did a Twitter AMA. He says that's just part of Season 3.

Any intel or confirmation that Elisabeth Shue did shoot scenes for CK3?

My concern with her character is if she's in it she might feel forced in, but then again they have done a pretty good job with the other old characters so maybe it'll be fine.

Just finished season 2. Enjoying so far.

But I can't help thinking how ridiculous it is that a bunch of kids turn into 9th degree blackbelts over one summer of learning karate.

I got one and wore it for Halloween last year. It was pretty junky costume quality and I had to sew up like 5 inches on the back because it was wide enough for jabba the hut. But it was totally awesome for that one night!
