Wife and I will be driving to New Orleans and then on to the panhandle of Florida and back starting next weekend.

On a previous trip, we listened to the original Serial podcast and enjoyed it. Any recommendations for about 25 hours of driving?

Besides Serial, we have both read The Martian (although I liked it more than her) and we both liked the Red Rising books. I'm typically Sci-Fi/Fantasy reader and she prefers biographies or drama (to include romance) books, when left to our own devices. Also, we both liked the usual suspect TV series (BB, Sopranos, first few seasons of Dexter, True Detective, Fargo, GOT, etc.)

The Witcher series is a great audiobook. The story is good and the VA does a great job. Same with Red Rising if you prefer sci-fi.

I really enjoyed Renegade Star and just started the black ocean series. Both space opera style series.

Series - Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson
First book is Columbus Day.
Space Opera but with humor and an amazing bit of voice acting. You'll understand my tag after you get into the series. My wife and a co-worker have also listened to the series and we get excited about each new book.

Podcasts:
Hardcore History - a guy named Dan Carlin takes a subject (anything from WW1 to the Achemid Persian dynasties to Caesar's conquest of Gaul) and goes into ridiculous, entertaining detail. His three part series on the Persians, for example, runs about 15 hours total. I've listened to it three times.

Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend - Conan chats for an hour or so with various people he knows. About 15 episodes so far, and they're all great.

Myths and Legends - A guy takes a myth or legend and does an entertaining retelling of the story. Subjects can vary widely, from classic Arthurian fare to stories from African or Korean folklore.

Stranglers - a completed true crime podcast that delves into the Boston Strangler mystery. Includes a lot of interviews.

Audiobooks: I'll always recommend the various Raymond Chandler novels, as performed by Ray Porter. Great hard-boiled detective novels and a great performance by Porter.

A recent one for me has been Mike Rowe's The Way I Heard It.

If you are into true crime, there are some awesome lengthy books on Audible.

A few that I really liked:

1) A Killer Among Us by Charles Bosworth. I could not stop listening. This one is an emotional rollercoaster.

2) Reasonable Doubt by Steve Vogel. A man who may or may not be innocent is accused of killing his wife and three kids. Even the prosecutor has doubts at times whether or not he's trying the right man. The author tells a balanced story from both sides of the investigation.

3) Evil Has a Name. A book on the cold case investigation that eventually nabbed the Golden State Killer.

And the greatest episode of all time is this one. Every single person should give this a listen.

That was terrible. Literally every other podcast suggested has multiple better episodes than your "greatest podcast episode of all time".

You don't think it's interesting that Rowe thinks that Gorbachev visiting a freaking Randall's in Clear Lake is what brought down the wall is interesting?

I'm not saying that Rowe's podcast is the best. I'm saying that that particular episode is really unique and fun and interesting, given where we are.

I subscribe to lots of podcasts and have only heard a handful of Rowe's but that particular one should be listened to.

I see you haven't offered up any. Let's hear what you suggest, o wise one and supreme judge of tastes.

11/22/63 by Stephen King. Audiobook is fantastic.

username fits!

Interesting thing about that book... My wife has read it and I haven't. I have read almost all of King's stuff, and my wife has read very little. In fact that may be the only one she HAS read. I'll have to see if she'd be interested in hearing it, I know I would.

1. I think it's an extremely well known story especially for any Texan alive then, and I'm pretty sure bagboys from that day have been telling that story on the texags GB for years.
2. I think the format was a sad RIP off of Paul Harvey.
3. I dont really care what a reality TV star thinks ended the cold war. If he has an opinion about the nastiest toilet he ever fake cleaned on his discovery TV show, that would make for a much more interesting podcast.
4. The OP wants podcast suggestions for a 25 hour drive and you suggested as essential something that wouldnt even fill the time of a gas fill up (a 4 minute podcast).

Finally, i appreciate your request for my podcast recs but virtually every podcast I enjoy has been listed above between Redstone and LHIOB's lists. I dont claim to be a "supreme judge of tastes" but when someone (you) repeatedly insists that they have the absolute best episode in the entire format and that EVERYONE MUST LISTEN, well, I listened, and it was not good. Sorry.

Thank you for the credit to my list. It was difficult to recall from memory, and to type it up on mobile.

Seems to only take 3 stars to turn blue on Ent, and I would appreciate the support to do so here.

Thanks everyone ,thought I'd give feedback.

We started listening to Homecoming a day or two before the trip to decide whether we wanted to pick that one. Wound up binge-watching the Julia Roberts series. I know there are more episodes on the podcast, so maybe we'll get around to listening, but so far we haven't.

On the way there, we wound up listening to Sirius's Top 1000 Classic Rock songs. I was really surprised "A day in the life" was number 2. I expected Yesterday or Hey Jude or Freebird (missed those when they came up and was trying to think of what we hadn't heard...) Layla was a pleasant surprise at 3.

Back to the podcasts: We listened to Dr. Death for the first half of the return trip. Unbelievable. Would love to hear an interview with the doctor. Hard to imagine how delusional he must be if he's NOT actually a sadistic psycho/socio-path.

Then we listened to Crime City the rest of the way. That's all we had time for.

I liked Crime City much better. Dr. Death was so depressing and unbelievable, at least Crime City had lots of comic relief. "Tony" was a character and I could listen to his wise-guy and cat-and-mouse (with the State Police detective) stories for several more hours.

Appreciate all the suggestions. I'll probably get into some of the others on my daily commute.
