I am a regular watcher. And I love the new cast. But reality is reality.

SNL and every other comedy outlet has skewered every president.

I don't remember them "skewering" Obama. Please.
So much potentially good material they just flat out ignored. Plenty of scandals, misstatements, and corrupt cabinet members.

The only thing remotely close was the SNL Schoolhouse Rock "I'm an executive order" bit, which was done to absolute perfection. But few and far between.

Most of it is simply the fact that these entertainers and writers are more chummy with one side of the aisle, and don't want to go too far.

I think another reason is that comedy took a turn for the worst under GWB and they really weren't sure how to deal with it. The empathy was thrown out the door.

Bush 41 and Clinton were made fun of, but there was empathy. Carvey had empathy for Bush and Hammond had empathy for Bill Clinton. The humor was more 'silly' than personal. That was truly the end of an era.

They have certainly done material about every single president since I've been aware of it, but it seems like 9 out of 10 or more of the cold opens in the last few years have been political and a bunch of it is low effort Alec Baldwin goes out there and acts ridiculous type material.

I've started watching the skits when they get posted to youtube after the show and I've like a lot of it, but the cold opens have just felt so repetitive lately. "Let's reenact the last ridiculous thing that happened in the White House" doesn't take much writing talent. I thought the Cohen hearing with Ben Stiller was good though.

90+% of all cold opens the last "several" years have been Alec Baldwin? Lol. Hes been on maybe once this season.

Reading is fundamental. I said 90% is low effort political.

You also said cold opens. There have been 10 episodes in 2019 and Baldwin has appeared on screen as trump in 3 of them.

3 of 10. Two episodes left before summer break. Maybe he will be on both of them so you can cry and that number will be up to 5 of 12 episodes.

Political cold opens and a few Weekend Update jokes are fine. At this point I'm just bored of politics in general. Trump says dumb **** all of the time which acts as bait for the writers. But that horse has been beaten dead. We need more Rectix and less politics.

The cold opens are easy to skip. I'd rather be interested in watching them since they can be really good.

The "What's my name gameshow" sketch has been done before but with Keenan being the office janitor who's name no one can recall. Having seen that one a few years back, the Mulaney one didn't quite pack the punch for me that it did for y'all. You know what's coming and there's really no way to change up the joke.
I cant seem to find it but Justin Timberlake did that sketch as himself and it was nails.

Nostalgia is a hell of a thing. Look I agree that the "talent" on the cast today pales in comparison to what it was 15, 20, 25 years ago but please don't forget that in the mid-90's there was legitimate talk about SNL getting canceled. It was BAD. I started college in '92 so that now legendary cast of Sandler, Farley, Spade, Schneider, Meadows and with the holdovers from the previous cast like Hartman, Myers, and Nealon was smack dab in my wheelhouse for SNL viewing. It's easy to look back now and pick out the classic skits and think they were all like that but lord there were A LOT of episodes that were just brutally unfunny. I honestly think Will Ferrell saved the show when he entered the scene in the late 90's.

All that stated, it was great seeing Sandler back at SNL. Opera Man was a great blast from the past. I was hoping for a canteen-boy skit (I mean, I'm pretty sure Baldwin lives in the studio) but I guess in today's political climate that's something that can't be joked about anymore because nobody has a sense of humor now.

tribute to farley was awesome. many were crying at the end. no idea how sandler did that without losing it.
Sandler actually debuted the song on the 21-year anniversary of Farley's death last December, which Netflix released. Good stuff.

Yeah, it's funny that he sang a song about how he got fired from the show. People have forgotten that there was a season or two in the mid 90s that were some of the worst there's ever been, and most of that cast that everyone remembers so fondly were still on there.

IDK, those were my middle school and high school years, so prime SNL viewing years. Lorne always says that people's favorite years are when they're in high school, and I guess it's true. It's funny to find out in recent years just how close they were to getting cancelled.

But I had no internet in them days and was blissfully unaware of critics' thoughts, so I just remember everyone talking about it at school on Mondays.

It's effing crazy funny how much Leslie Jones looks like Carl Weathers in that skit. They did a hell of a job on that.

The ratings were so low in the 1994-95 season that they were talking of either cancelling the show or replacing Lorne Michaels. Hartman had left the previous year and Myers quit a few weeks into the 94-95 season. There were apparently other issues going on with the cast as well. With the pressure mounting, Michaels pretty much got rid of the entire cast and replaced them with Ferrell, Oteri, etc.

1995's final sketch where Sandler and Farley throw themselves into a polar bear pit to get mauled was apparently about their impending departure from the show.
