My mention of Star Wars was tongue-in-cheek. However, Lucas always meant it to be a tribute to B-movies and tv serials, just like Indy was. So it kind of qualifies.

Now the interesting one is Halloween. It was just a low-budget slasher movie with a dude in a cheap mask stalking babysitters.

If it became a "cult hit" instead of creating an iconic horror franchise, would it qualify?

I would consider Halloween to be a B movie. If OP said horror or sci-fi, that would have been my answer.

I think Escape from New York qualifies as a B-movie, as does They Live. Either of those would be my answer to the OP.

Something like Alien might have initially been considered a B-movie, but given its state-of-the-art, big-budget and box office returns, I'd say that kind of sci-fi movie would not be considered a B-movie these days. But a movie that inspired Alien, It, the Terror From Beyond Space, certainly would still be. Or check out any of the sci fi movies that Roger Corman did in the wake of Alien - Galaxy of Terror, Forbidden World, and even the Star Wars inspired Battle Beyond the Stars, for true B-movies.

Lots of misunderstanding of B movie and sci-fi here.

As a young kid In the 80s. I liked the cheesey "Cyclone" with Heather Thomas for some reason. I saw that it was uploaded to YouTube awhile back and watched it and it is terrible, but at least you got Heather Thomas, haha.

I once watched the "TimeRider" with Fred Ward on tv once in the 90s or maybe early 00s and liked it but could never remember the title of the movie and never seemed to pop up on tv ever again.

Is "The Wraith" a B movie or was it more mainstream?

Idk.....just doesn't come across as a B movie to me. The story, writing, and acting seemed above B movie level. I personally believe Michael Gross should have won an Oscar for that film.

the definition of a B movie is a low budget movie meant to be the 2nd half of a double feature at the theater.

Since double features don't exist I would say a B movie is low budget. But in todays money that could still be a several million dollar budget. Lots of these movies are not Low budget, although they may be bad or cheesy.

If you look at all the various definitions for "B-movie", you'll find two things in common:
  • low budget
  • quick production with little attention to quality

Go from there.

Its more than just low budget, but also low production values. Three Billboards Outside Edding, Missouri had a budget of 15 million, which is nothing by today's standards, but there's now way that should be considered a B movie. Logan Lucky had a budget of 29 million, Lady Bird had a budget of 10 million. Like I said in an earlier post, it's hard to define, but you know it when you see it.

The upcoming Halloween movie has a budget of $10M.

The fact that it's so low-budget actually gets me more excited.

Nope. Most pretentious sci-fi movie of all time? Maybe. But not a B-movie by any stretch.
