Growing up I remember watching a movie called "Robot Jox." Made it 1989 it was about an alternate world where war is outlawed and 2 factions go at with single-man operated war machines.

Remember it being a lot of fun and now as an adult pretty impressed with the special effects given the year and extremely low budget. Here's a clip of one of the fight scenes....

btw....I haven't seen either of the Pacific Rim movies but when I saw the trailer for the first one, IMMEDIATELY reminded me of this film.

Does The Last Starfighter count as a B movie? If so, that would be mine, I loved that as a kid. Lifeforce was another favorite along with Time Rider, a movie with Fred Ward that kind of doubles as a western.

Since it doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves (and Disney doesn't seem to even acknowledge it's existence), I guess The Black Hole is considered a B-movie.

And I absolutely love it.

Yes, I have a big soft spot for The Black Hole too. It is at times ridiculous, but the cast is really great. I don't know if it qualifies as a B-movie, though; it was the most expensive movie produced by Disney up to that point.

All right, it's pretty slim, but OK. Let's call it a weird fantasy / sci-fi mashup.

My nomination is Escape From NY.

Look at what you get:
John Carpenter
Kurt Russell
Ernest Borgnine
Adrienne Barbeau
Isaac Hayes
Lee Van Cleef

It doesn't get more B-movie than that.

I loved Freejack when I was a kid. Even 25 years later, I still randomly get Hit Between The Eyes by the Scorpions stuck in my head and will start singing it.

What about Flight of the Navigator? I loved that one too.

I'm not sure how much more b-list SF you can get than President Dwayne Hector Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho.

But I will nominate the Fifth Element. Dont get me wrong. I will watch it every time its on I love me some Fifth Element. But as a real plot its campy as hell.

Yeah some of the movies listed I'd think qualify as major blockbusters. Since theaters don't do double features anymore I don't think there is a set definition of a B movie. If we're going to consider the classic definition, in the '80's anything Troma would have to be the baseline. Anything above that probably wouldn't qualify.

The definition of B movie has changed over the years. In its original form, a B movie was the second half of a double feature that was usually sci fi or horror, low budget, cheesy and campy. Now, it seems like B movie means low budget. I would never consider Star Wars or Terminator to be a B movie because those movies were not low budget for the sake of being cheap. They were using state of the art effects for its time. I think a B movie is hard to define, but its one of those "you know it when you see it" kind of things.
