I think Cruz and Ford are locks.

Arnold is up there as well he had movies like Conan, Red Sonja, and Beastmaster well before the Terminator movies. Also Last Action Hero, Commando, Total Recall, True Lies, and Predator were good action films. I think it would be hard to leave him off.

The 4th one is hard. Norris, Van Damme, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Gibson, Reeves, Willis, Sly, Kurt Russel, Bruce Lee. I just don't know maybe between Gibson and Willis. Don't know if I can choose between Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.

Ted? Jose?

Yeah, but you have to consider that Sly's career is almost entirely unsullied with drama, romance, horror, family fun, or other such ridiculous distractions. He's been making Rambo, Rocky, and thinly disguised copies for over 40 years.

it sucks getting old. your mind says do one thing and the hands do something else.

but this did get me wondering. so far all the nominations have been males. Who would be the best female action star?
Milla Jovovich
Angelina Jolie
Michelle Rodriguez
Scarlett Johansson
Kate Beckinsale
Uma Therman
Sigourney Weaver
Pam Grier
Michelle Yeoh
Lucy Liu

There is a ton more Keaton stuff out there. I know the house falling he did, and the throwing the railroad tie were real (the tie on the tracks flips up and almost hits his head). The others I think are real, playing with perspective, or Glass Matte Paintings. Such as:
This is Chaplin:

No love for Segal. Under Siege is pretty classic.

Wesley Snipes had his moments too.

So did Liam Neeson. Bruce Lee should definitely be in top 3 with nods to Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

After reading a few of the replies, a few other "candidates" came to mind:

Charles Bronson
Lee Marvin
Clint Eastwood
David Carradine

I'm scratching my head if you're leaving off Bruce Willis. Think about his career transformation from Moonlighting to Die Hard.

Willis
Arnold
Stallone - reading this thread makes me want to start a permanent Demolition Man thread
Cruise
Ulrich

The greatest action characters are terminator, John McClane, Martin Riggs, Rambo, and Indiana Jones.

My reasoning for Reeves above Willis was, taking their main franchises out (Matrix and Die Hard), who has the better action resume?

Reeves has Point Break, Speed, and the John Wick series. Bruce Willis has... Looper?

Right, but why take out their best work to make a decision?

And no offense, but Matrix 2 and 3 royally sucked.

I think it's more that there's got to be a bigger body of work than just a franchise, at least from my perspective.

You're going to stop at Looper? Bruce Willis has 5th Element, 12 Monkeys, Armageddon, Tears of the Sun, Unbreakable, and The Jackal.

Besides, The Matrix is a better movie but Die Hard has more good movies. When you look in the dictionary under "action movie" it says "see: Die Hard". The Matrix has action but it's not really an action movie.

Can't even come close to agreeing with that. The entire Matrix franchise is massive set piece action and chase sequences.

I put it more in the scifi side of things. I know tons of action movies have sci fi elements, but with Matrix the scifi/ philosophy is the point and the action is secondary even though it's copious. Something like, say, Total Recall flips it. The action is the point, scifi is just the hook.

Disagree... when one of the main elements of the sci-fi is learning (via download or practice) to fight in different ways and the plot plays out in a series of man on man combat sequences with and without guns..... it's an action flick in a sci-fi world.

The Matrix is a science fiction movie. It does contain quite a bit of action, but it's still a science fiction movie. Same is true for Terminator, but because of the action involved, those movies shouldn't be discounted.

Sin City? He has a ton of borderline action movies too: Lucky #Slevin, The Whole Nine Yards, The Siege.

But also, most of all, Pulp Fiction!

I think a lot of people here are suffering from distance to the 80s and 90s action scene, your Mount Rushmore of Action is
