Any thoughts on the second season?

Non-spoilers:

I like how they developed and fleshed out the characters a lot more.

I thought part of the season finale was gratuitous.

For some reason I can't stop watching this show (I have one episode left of season two) despite being able to objectively think this season is a mess. I think it's maybe because I do at least respect this show's attempt at tackling these issues head on, even if they're pretty heavy handed.

The Bryce Walker character is so hard to stomach. Always for a beat down.

Justin Prentice, the actor who plays Bryce, has received hatred IRL for doing such a great job with that role.

The irony is if you watch the "Beyond 13 Reasons" after-show, he's a diehard SJW.

I think they kind of had to work to shove everything they could into this season, which is why I thought one scene in the finale was gratuitous.

I also hate the Tony character. I think this show would have been 25% better just by writing that whole character out.

Interesting. I like Tony. A guy with an incredible sense of loyalty and justice who has anger management issues and is willing to be there whenever Clay needs him.

I like that aspect of him, as an audience we're supposed to, but I just think he's a weird character from a plot perspective. He's been to school like one time in the two season run of this show. I almost think he'd be a better character if he went to a different school, that would at least explain why he's not around most of the time.

It's hard to explain exactly, because I get that we're supposed to like him. But the fact that the actor is 26 probably doesn't help. He's old even grading on an older-people-playing-teens curve.

Tim Granaderos, who plays Monty, is 31 years old.

Monty isn't a core character though, not like Tony. That's not a huge deal though, like I said, it's hard to explain why I don't buy his character as much as the others, I just don't for some reason.

Do you understand why I said one scene was gratuitous?

Granted, they needed an action to push Tyler over the edge and get the climactic scene you knew was coming since the end of S1.

He does seem kind of "stuck in" the series. I know that most of the actors are generally older than their characters, but even this guy's character seems like he's in his 30s. He just doesn't really blend.

I thought the same thing last season, too. I couldn't figure out what *that* was the person Hannah left her tapes with.

Also, this season makes me feel incredibly old bc some of the actors playing the adults were teenagers on series when I was a teenager: Alex's Mom was on Dawson's Creek, the attorney was on My So Called Life, and someone else's dad was on That Thing You Do. I'm pretty sure he was older when that came out in 96, but still...

Things I said out loud watching this:

-"Another boner?"
-"did clay just actually ask someone if they've listened to the tapes? That's hilarious"
-"no way Tyler shoots up the school. Show producers don't have the balls"
-"who are you and why are burning those photographs? How'd you even know where or what they were?"
-"god dammit Hannah just go away"

My synopsis of S2 is the same as of S1- no way in hell would I have watched this show on any other platform, and it would probably be in the lower tier of shows airing on the CW. Yet because of the power Netflix holds over me, I watched 13 hours in less than a week.

The first season was at least interesting for awhile. This season was just pointless.

Did you actually miss that the person burning the photos was Nina?

The main reason I watched it is my wife was out of town so I didn't want to watch any of the series that we watch together so I figured I'd go ahead and give the second season a go.

The scene you're talking about was bad, and definitely hard to watch, but like you said it did kind of fit something we knew was coming. I actually think the most gratuitous scene from a plot standpoint was Chloe being pregnant. Seemed like they were having a brainstorming session at the writer's meeting on how to end the season and decided to go with every single idea. That one was just thrown in so randomly.

I can't decide if I wanted Tyler to go through with it or not, but I knew he wasn't going to because it would have been all over the news as a "controversy."

Started watching episode one with my wife, got about 20 minutes into it, and then realized I just didn't care at all anymore. This should have been a one season show.

Walked in the living room to find my wife watching the finale last night and it just so happened to be the extremely gratuitous scene referenced above. Glad I skipped the season.

There are people on Reddit speculating that there will be a Season 3, and I'm trying to figure out what they'll base it on. I think they managed to get in every single stereotypical teenage issue in this season and last season, so what do they have left? Not to mention that I thought they did a decent job of closure on this season.

13 Reasons Why Chloe Aborted That Kid

Also, am I the only one that at the end was going Wait a minute here... are all of these kids going to cover for someone who was about to commit a mass murder? Like, it was already kind of crazy that there were no repercussions for Clay pulling a gun on Bryce. But at least in that case it made sense that it's in everyone's best interest to stay quiet, but this dude was strapped with enough ammo to take out of half the school at the school dance and they're going to help him escape the police?

What crime has Tyler committed at this point? Being in possession of a gun isn't a crime

I'm reasonably sure that a minor bringing a loaded gun onto a high school campus is probably a crime. And if it wasn't a crime, which it definitely should be, then they wouldn't need to hide him from the police anyway.

I'm just saying that I don't think that what happened on the show would be anyone's reaction in that situation. Like the dude obviously needs some help, I'm not sure that helping him escape from the police after he was literally about to murder a bunch of folks is a great idea.
SACR
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I look at it as showing Clay's growth. He left Hannah because she told him to leave, and then disaster struck. Hence the importance of Clay telling Tyler, "I don't want you to die." It is everything he should have told Hannah had he stuck around

Why was Nina burning the pics?

I was a little annoyed at all the women describing their sexual assaults as Jess made the victim impact statement. It felt like a gratuitous nod to the #metoo movement.

Because she was in one of them, and it was a reminder of her sexual assault, which we know she has tried to ignore and he never really dealt with.
