The Awakening by Kate Chopin.

When our 10th grade English teacher asked what we thought about the book, I replied, "I would have liked it a lot better if the main character had drowned 150 pages earlier."

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Could have been a quarter of the length that it was.

Scarlet Letter for sure. Didn't enjoy it the first time and then we seemed to spend half the year in AP English studying it. It would never go away!

As for highly praised book I didn't connect with, I STRUGGLED to even finish "A Confederacy of Dunces". No idea what people see in that book.

Naked Lunch by William S. Borroughs...too weird to finish

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson was way overrated and awful

The Road by Jack Kerouac...tried reading this thing three times, so boring.

so basically if you were stoned out of your gourd when you wrote a book, i probably didn't like it.

Confederacy of Dunces was over rated but did have some funny parts, the letter back from the Pants company and the whole hot dog cart.

Not surprised to see confederacy of dunces mentioned a few times. I thought it was hilarious but i know well read people who love it and others who hated it.
Cormac McCarthy has a writing style that is tough to get used to with the way he writes dialogue but the content is great.

For me, as a school kid I could never get through 1984 but i think the fact that it was assigned as summer reading was a bigger factor than the book itself sucking.
Lately, I can't get through the Hamilton biography from Chernow. It's not a bad book but i can't get past the middle. I will read a chapter, then put it down and read 2 or 3 other books.

Funny you mention Cormac. I LOVED The Road but hated Blood Meridien. It was so damn slow and repeatative. Another book lots of people love but I barely made it through.

Since many of you are referencing books you read in high school English, here is one of my favorite anecdotes.

One of my fellow teachers was about to administer the reading exam on A Separate Peace. As she was walking toward the first row to pass out the tests, students were whispering to each other, trying to bring those poor souls who had not finished the book up to speed. As my friend passed a group whose heads were huddled together in obvious conspiracy, a student on the outskirts of the circle gasped, "FINNY DIES?!?"

A couple of seats over, another student said, "Who's Finny?"

Yep this is a pretty common occurrence in high school classrooms.
I remember we had to write an essay after reading Animal Farm my sophomore year and a good friend of mine, who is a current student at A&M right now, thought that Snowball was a bunny and referenced this many times in her essay. She did not get a very good grade.

I BSed my way through various essay tests at A&M reading only the first and last page of every chapter.

i tried to read this one and dropped it after a few pages. The wiki entry for this and the ones that follow are interesting but the writing just didn't do it for me. Not a perfect story plot wise but fantasy that's not sword and sorcery definitely picqued my interest.

Big letdown after reading all reviews ejaculating over it. I guess the author checks a lot of boxes for libtard critics solely based on his socialist views.

We read "The Killer Angels" jr year of high school. One guy after the test was shocked to find out that the north wore blue, not the south.

This. I got about a third into it and it was just so repetitive. The first few chapters are pretty great though.

Anything by Ayn Rand, really. I get that the philosophy is attractive to a lot of people, but she can't write dialogue or characters to save her life.

I mean the hunger games were children's books. Seems a little unfair to lump then in with books intended for adults.

Maybe low hanging fruit, but one of the worst books I've ever read was The Invasion by Dean Koontz. I tend to finish everything I read because of habit, but I knew I was saving hours of my life by not finishing that piece of sheet. I don't even hate Dean Koontz, but that book was just awful.

Didn't like it from the very beginning and it never got any better. I gave it the benefit of the doubt for a while and stuck it out but eventually realized it was a waste of time and called it quits.
This is my favorite book. I've read it several times.

Gillian Flynn: Gone Girl and Dark Places. Plus, the diary grammar was so bad that I couldn't tell if the "Gone Girl" was intentionally dumb or Flynn was.

The one that I hated the most is the Scarlet Letter. I could find a way to enjoy just about anything we read in high school as a class but this was terrible. So bad that I completely shut down any sort of intellectual comprehension and just "read" the pages without actually reading it. What a waste of class time.

I did this, too. I remember the class discussions and when the teacher pointed out that (Spoiler Alert) Dimmsdale was the one who the affair with Hester, I was like "How the heck did you make that jump?", but again, it was just such a dry slog, that I wasn't even comprehending what i was reading.

But Catcher in the Rye is up there for me for one of the worst books ever. What a complete piece of crap this book is.

Agree on Catcher in the Rye. Terrible book. After finishing it, I was wondering why it is considered a classic and why it's banned by a lot of schools.

It's a tossup. Freshman year of college I had to read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Agony. Even with the help of Cliff's Notes it was hard going because the characters were flat as pancakes. It's a comfort to find that Mark Twain disliked Jane Austen's work even more than I did.

In the late seventies everybody was reading the LEFT BEHIND series. I eagerly checked the first volume of it out of the church library. Talk about BAD writing. As the old saying goes, that's not writing it's typing. A junior high student could have done better.
