I laughed at times in the movie because EVIL is winning.

I am evil.

I laughed when the dad picked the son up at school and they were pulling up into the driveway and the mom comes running out to the car like a crazy person and you can tell the dad is like "what is up with this ***** now."

Toni Collette was incredible in this movie. She's such an underrated actress. Phenomenal job.

Just saw this. Good acting all around and it was suspenseful. But then I think it fell into the trap of most horror movies (especially Stephen King) in that it had painted itself into a corner and it couldn't wrap it up and just ended stupid.

The ending is definitely something that I can understand people feeling is dumb, but for some reason it worked for me.

As with The Witch (should have been titled Black Philip), and as with House of the Devil and some others, I appreciate it when filmmakers take Christianity / Luciferianism seriously and in an informed way.

Hereditary did that :
Demons exist
They can be "familiar" to families
Some people literally worship them
Ghosts exist and can communicate
Some "communication" really works and is also a bad idea
Symbolism is important
Lucifirians / black masses disdain Christ by name

The floating former human doesn't really fit though

It was tense all throughout and then the last 20 minutes or so was possibly the most terrifying stuff put to film for me.

I thought it was great. Not the scariest movie I've ever seen but filled with dread and just this "heaviness". The accident and the boys response to it I thought was perfect. This complete state of shock and acting like what has happened can't be real. It'll all be fine in the morning.

And then this fate worse than hell. To be King. Spooky.

Also filmed beautifully.

This movie gets a 5/10 from me. I did not find it scary. There were only a few disgusting/gory parts that made me feel nauseous. The biggest thing that ruined it for me was the ending. It was a let down. I hate the recent trend in horror movies where the bad guys win. This movie felt like a mix between Paranormal Activity and Insidious. There is nothing really new here.

Huge letdown, they did a poor job explaining things, if you blinked you'd have missed the whole point of the son's usefulness.

Best parts

Accident
Daughter

Lead actress was great

Models were cool

The rest was pretty lame.

Skip it if you haven't seen it.

So I think the synopsis given for the movie ruined it for me. It says that the mom learns more and more about the family history and discovers terrible things. I expected a lot more story on years of family history and got impatient with the film as it took till the final few scenes for her to finally open the books and start finding out what was going on. And it left a lot to be desired.

For what the movie was though, it was original and very well filmed and acted. Just wished it focused on family history more.

I somehow missed hearing about this last year, but checked it out based on the Midsommar hype (which I haven't seen). It's free on Amazon Prime now for those who also missed it. It has faults and probably should have been shorter, but wow is it memorable.

I agree with this. Sort of wish someone had just explained the purpose more to him for a few minutes before he went into the treehouse. Sort of a "you can never hide from this, here's why. This is your destiny, and you are making a beautiful sacrifice" moment.
