Been hearing some buzz on this. Very excited for some good horror

Opens this weekend. Currently at 94% on rotten tomatoes.

This blurb stood out to me:

"drenched in dread, brimming with intensity, and sure to haunt the souls of those brave enough to watch"

The hype is real. I'm a huge horror fan. Can't wait. Anyone else?

That was the most upsetting, unsettling, and terrifying movie that I've seen. I loved it.

Glad to hear it. I can't wait. May I request spoiler tags going forward for any plot points?

Absolutely.. I'd recommend seeing this one without reading anything or even seeing a trailer. The filmmakers did a fantastic job creating a tone that stuck through the entire movie.

I would definitely agree that if you aren't a horror movie fan, this isn't the movie for you. Bummed you didn't enjoy it though. This was exactly what I wanted out of the movie, maybe more. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff both stole the show with the performances.

Didn't quite stick the landing for me but holy hell was that unnerving and left me uncomfortable . I know the witch can be devisive but the last five minutes of that movie still kind of haunts me. There are scenes in this that while not nearly as evocative as that one scene, there were more unsettling scenes as a whole that is gonna leave a mark.

Also the way the trailers were done the movie took a massive swerve 40 minutes in I wasn't expecting

Once again a huge disconnect between what critics like and what audiences like. As noted, it's at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes; on Cinemascore, which surveys audiences on opening night, it's a D+, the lowest rating of any film in current release.

I wouldn't be surprised if the poor audience reaction is based on it being 2 hours and 7 minutes long. Mel Brooks said that 90 minutes is the perfect time for a movie, since that's as long as any human being can make one box of Raisinets last.

Whoa. That was terrifying. I will say as opposed to ATM1876 I am a big fan of the horror genre.

SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!

Love many aspects of the movie, but my "favorite" part was the big death and the aftermath. First the initial shock and the fact that the marketing of the movie really sold the twist. Second, Peter's reaction to the incident, extremely well acted. Then finally, Annie discovering the body and hearing her blood curdling scream while being shown a prolonged shot of Charlie's head covered in ants. Just a highly effective five minutes and nothing directly demonic about any of that.

Again, overall really enjoyed it. It was well acted and well directed film that felt like it spent most of the first 90 minutes focused more on engaging family drama than direct horror before turning the dial up to to 11 for the final 30 minutes.

Awesome stuff.

Agreed on the accident being the best part of the movie. Genuinely shocking. Good on the trailers for not giving it away.

I haven't seen it, but the over-hyping of it in marketing is only going to hurt it.

Saw it last night. I found it fairly creepy and disturbing with a constantly increasing sense of dread.

I really liked it.

Just got back. I can say that I can't recall ever feeling so uncomfortable in a movie. This movie is definitely filled with dread and deeply disturbing.

I'm a big fan of the genre and this movie is definitely in my top 5.

Wonderfully done movie... what makes the movie so good as you cannot tell the ultimate direction until the last 15 minutes.

Good...
-the car death
-the acting was wonderful
-the thrill of the dominos falling at the end
-son waking up and mom is hidden in the corner of the wall
-the family dinner scene
-the twists/combos.
-Mom sleepwalking to burn her kids and choking her son was really saving them from their demise as she was lucid.
-The grandmother killing her husband and son, making sure the grandson was born, and coddling the granddaughter for their purpose.
-The entire funeral party shows up again later.

Bad
-the son leaving Charlie's body in the car is a huge plot hole for me. No one would do what he did. (If I missed something here let me know)
-the dad did his part but was useless
-the friend that helped her reach out as a medium was what I figured out way too quickly.
-the ending. A few people laughed in our theater. It was thrilling to the end but the buildup didn't live up to the hype, even if the movie was excellent.
-it was a family drama that went full horror/thriller last 30 minutes. I didn't expect that.

I'd give this a really solid rating, but I know I missed a few things in the first viewing.

Leaving the body in the car is not exactly a plot hole, just odd behavior. People exhibit odd behavior when in shock.

The movie certainly builds on what you say prior to that... and after that. Probably not the best description from me. Appreciate the response.

Loved it. Wish it was scarier to be honest but can't deny it was an extremely well done film

Saw it in theaters last night and loved it. Probably one of the best horror films I have seen in years. Acting was great and so was the plot.

A lot of points have been made on the things I enjoyed, particularly the accident and its aftermath. But I and my friend who went to see it ended up laughing quite a bit during serious parts of the movie. I could tell what they were doing with the movie but there was just something hilarious during certain points. Apparently people in our theater thought so as well as there were plenty of laughs.

People at the theater that I was at laughed quite a bit as well towards the end

Wow.. I loved it. And my wife secretly did as well even though she claimed to be anxious the entire time having a mild panic attack.

My favorite part of the entire movie was a dumbass couple bringing their 7 and 10 year old kids in to see it.

I remember just a few weeks ago watching The Killing of a Sacred Deer and feeling very unsettled and uncomfortable during and after. Well that ish was child's play compared to this one. Collete did a freaking great job.

I REALLY liked this. family dynamic with religious undertones.

I loved the buildup and the payoff (and i took it as real an not a psychosis allegory as the gf did).

The acting was great, Tony Collette good lord.

the D+ was clearly because of the right turn in the last 30 minutes so i get it. But man this movie was good. I fully agree though that if you're a horror fan (suspira, carrie, the omen all come to mind)... then this movie is for you.

Loved this, but with reservations. That accident scene was the most terrifying part of this film. Like others have said, the discovery of the girl's body by her mother was more horrifying than any of the demonic ridiculousness that followed. My jaw literally dropped and stayed dropped during that scene. Truly horrific.

I really need to see it again to kind of get a hold of the themes because the audience I saw it with was terrible. Worst Drafthouse experience I've ever had. Like others have said, lots of uncomfortable laughter in parts that completely took me out of the movie. Toni Collette-Oscar, give it to her.

I can be a nervous laugher so very sorry if I am that guy sometimes

This movie was masterful had holding painful scenes that are quick flashes in lesser horror films and just holding it a few seconds longer than would be acceptable. The head, the burning, her on the ceiling, the decap. Just masterful

Saw it tonight and the theater was along for the ride, silent with some gasps, until the mother in the corner of the ceiling kinda swims out of the son's room. Then numerous people laughed loudly.

The preshow included interviews with the director, and his influences, and it all made sense given what he said in those interviews.
