Is it possible you were watching a 'Pan and scan' version?
That and the "soap opera effect" setting, I forget the technical term, drive me nuts.

There are several but one i can think of is the scene in Collateral where Max finally confronts Vincent before Max flips the cab. the dialog and the close up of their two faces, great music (audioslave) and then culminating in the flip of the cab (which i appreciated the visuals and lack of sound and movement there would be in a random downtown LA street at 3-4 in the morning)

Of course i may be biased, i just really enjoy the hell out of that movie.

For me in that movie it's this part that has stuck with me forever. I literally can't squeeze by someone and not think of this. Literally every time.

I'll give you the scene, and see who all recognzes it.

IMO, the best single sceen by this actor in his career. A powerful sceen by someone who while famous as an entertainor, probably not really recognized as a "great character actor".

(Doing my best from memory)

"The law! What law! Where's the law Drew. Now if we go into town and tell someone what happened here there's gonna be a trial. Trial by jury. Now that much law I do know. I'll be damned if i'm gonna sit in front of a jury in front of this boys cousin, his uncle, hell maybe even his brother.

...

You ever look out over a lake and think about something burried underneth it. Burried underneeth it! Now that's about as burried as you can get."
