This is actually a really good video for this whole discussion. Even talks a little bit about the major differences between Williams and Zimmer.

Worth the 12 minute runtime IMO.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing, even though it manages to take a dump all over modern and classical movie music.

Ill give the nod to zimmer. I feel like williams did a lot more great thing but that he was more of a volume shooter. A good chunk of his stuff did nothing for me. Zimmer hit more out of the park imo.

I for one was impressed that he composed the music for Fiddler on the Roof as one of his earlier works.

Not to nitpick, but the Fiddler music was composed by Jerry Bock. John Williams conducted the orchestra in the movie version of the Broadway play.

Hans Zimmer fans in Houston -

Sugarland Smart Financial Centre - Hans Zimmer Friday, July 14th

Quote:

The concert will be in two parts: the first being some of Zimmer's classic movie scores including GLADIATOR, THE LION KING and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and the second featuring re-imagined versions of some classic scores such as THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY and INCEPTION with special guests from the rock and pop world.

You don't even have to stay for the whole thing to get the complete experience. In true Hans Zimmer fashion, Pirates sounds eerily identical to Gladiator.

Just to create some more discussion - what is y'alls favorite John Williams score?

I have to go with E.T. Been a favorite of mine since I was a kid.
Star Wars Duel of Fates and the Force Theme are two of my all-time favorites.

Bonus for JW...he composed both versions of the Lost in Space intros. The one for Season 3 is one of the best of all time.

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

IDK... in my mind, Williams just goes hand in hand with adventure, nostalgia and movie magic. Probably because of the iconic nature of his music. His ability to score such iconic themes to movies or people is greater than Zimmer, imo.

I associate Zimmer more with atmospheric scores, which are great in their own right.

Sheer body of work would have to put them both over him, but I still believe Howard Shore has composed the best movie scores of all time, taking the entire LotR trilogy into consideration.

Strong take, and I think we should appreciate both for being almost completely different styles. Williams will never be topped on iconic themes, while Zimmer just has an amazing ability to capture the mood/tone/atmosphere of a movie.

Definitely agree that LOTR could easily go 1v1 with any of their works though, was a masterpiece.

I know it's a kids movie but the first Narnia was strong as hell for a score too.

Both excellent, but Williams was a huge part of a movies ability to create an immersive environment that is so recognizable after the fact (without realizing the importance of the music when initially watching it. Even Carol
Of the Bells from Home Alone is so perfect for the mood it creates vivid images and emotions from the movie. Pretty amazing when you listen to them as stand alone tracks.

I have mentioned it before, but John Williams has the second most Oscar nominations ever (52), second only to some guy named Walt Disney.

Enjoyed watching that "The Movies That Made Us" episode on Netflix about Home Alone and how they joked about possibly getting Williams, and how his music just changed the entire perception of the movie.

I mean, John Williams' score is the first thing I remember about Home Alone, from when I was a young kid watching it for the first time.

I guess I have just never been impacted in the same way from another composer.
