It's actually pretty cool how this ties in with the History Channel show of Vikings. As some of the same historical characters are represented on both sides of the conflict and in both countries during the time period.

"Vikings" is playing loose with the events as they span many disjointed events from 793 to 870 (ish) while The Last Kingdom takes place from 866 to 911
