I liked Kings Speech. There.

King's Speech was a great movie, highlighted by two excellent performances, but Social Network was masterful.

It will be even more important years from now, because as much as most of us don't want to admit it... Facebook is going to be one of the biggest companies in history.
And that's the beauty of this movie. I liked it for complete opposite reasons. I'm not really a social media person, much less Facebook. You could have plugged in whatever corporation and it still would have been riveting. The direction, the acting, the editing, the score, the storytelling. It was all so well done.

Yes, I get that Facebook is much more than just a social media platform now and the importance isn't lost on me. But in the end, it was a movie of how human relationships can fracture so easily. At least to me. **** was perfect.

I liked a bunch of the ones dissed in this thread but just couldn't get into There Will Be Blood.
Luckily for you, it didn't win.

I think for a movie to be best picture it needs to be something I'd want to see more than once. Manchester would be an exception.

I agree. Leave the overly artsy stuff for Sundance.

That's an excellent point, and agree completely

Sorry, but this is a terrible take. A good movie is a good movie. Plus some of the movies that win at Sundance aren't what many would consider "artsy".

Hopefully, VanZandt92 is talking about hard to stomach movies. Like Schindler's List.

Chariots of Fire - bullet to the head painful (Reds was a better movie that year)
Raiders was better than either.

Dark Knight

No way its gets an Oscar if Heath Ledger didn't die
It didn't even get nominated. By that logic, it's actually underrated.

Are you talking about Heath Ledger winning for supporting actor?

I'm not gonna pretend that it didn't help him win and build a legend, but he still would've won easily. That performance is absolutely incredible.

Best Sound Editing and Ledger got Best Supporting Actor.

It had eight nominations, but no best picture or best director.

It was up for best editing, best cinematography, art direction, etc.

I know, but this is about best movie awards, not acting.

Assuming you're talking about The best supporting actor award, who in your opinion should have won it that year?

Now that I think of it, the entire 2008 Oscar nominee list for Best Picture was practically overrated.

Slumdog Millionaire
Frost/Nixon
Benjamin Button
Milk
The Reader

2008 movies that didn't get nominated:

The Dark Knight
The Wrestler
WALL-E
Man on Wire
Even Iron Man was better than some of those movies

ummmm......Man on Wire actually WON the Oscar ....it's a Documentary. Different category.

lol...it was impossible for it to get nominated for best picture. which was what you were talking about. but ok. whatever.

yes some of those were worthy movies. probably would get nominated today as they nominate like 10 now vs. 5 then.

doubt anything would have beaten Slumdog though anyway.

I have little doubt that is true if you threw in The Dark Knight or Iron Man, but there's no doubt in my mind that out of the nominees Slumdog was going to be the clear winner.

lol....not in hollywood....Iron Man and Dark Knight had about as much chance even if nominated as Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark had...which is to say NONE.

Just not a Hollywood award type movie - not best picture anyway.

The ONLY blockbuster action type movies to ever win were Rocky and LOTR:ROTK unless you count Titanic. And none of those are superhero or really sci-fi type movies.

I'm only talking about my criteria. Slumdog doesn't get best picture because I think best picture needs some escapism, fantasy and wonder. And lots of adventure. It shouldn't feel like I just got punched in the gut like Birdman.

I don't have a problem with Ledger winning particularly, but I would have given it to Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was a badass. I hated that bast ard in Talented Mr. Ripley. Damn I hated everybody in that movie because they acted out as *******s so well.

Heck I'd take Talented Mr Ripley over any number of these movies.

Over the last 20 years, the only actor I would rank above Hoffman is Daniel Day-Lewis.

Jeff Bridges has had a pretty good run the last 20 years. Big Lebowski to Hell or High Water, though limiting it to just the last twenty years does eliminate three of his Oscar nominations. DiCaprio has had more than a few memorable performances in the last couple decades, too, but the timeline does cut What's Eating Gilbert Grape off his list.

You mean Sir Daniel Day Lewis

Leo's a bigger star than any of the others mentioned, but although I do think he's very talented, I think he has benefitted from an association with legendary directors. I don't think he jumps off the screen in films like Blood Diamond or J. Edgar.

I think Hoffman's range was a little wider than Bridges, although Bridges would also make my top five.

Television actors probably should be considered too, given the evolution of cable series over this time period. Bryan Cranston has had an amazing run.
VanZandt92
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Cranston is no Seymour Hoffman!
