I listen to The Ticket entertainment segments pretty consistently. Thats the sports / entertainment station out of Dallas. They launched into a discussion of Brokeback Mountain recently and the take away was that it was overrated.

Retrospectively, what do you think?

I think it's MUCH better than Crash, which won that year.

Crash is terrible.

Birdman, not that I find it to be a bad movie, but several movies that year I thought were better: The Imitation Game, Whiplash and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

I think it should either have gone to Whiplash or The Grand Budapest Hotel, I love both of those films. The Grand Budapest Hotel might be my favorite Wes Anderson movie now, it's on equal ground with Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Agree on Crash, it's not good, all the movies it was up against could have won it (Capote, Brokeback Mountain, Munich, Good Night and Good Luck)

I was having a discussion the other day, and I mentioned Munich in passing and that when I saw it originally that I thought it was fantastic. My friend hadn't seen it. It was the movie that cemented my opinion that Daniel Craig was the right call to be Bond as well.

No ***** I have Crash on DVD. I have no idea why or how I got it. Now that I think about it, I'm a little pissed that it's in my house taking up space.

Hurt Locker.....ugh. Just wow.....anyone in the army i know has hated that movie. and there are easily 5 or 6 better nominated that year (Up, Up In the Air, District 9, Inglorious Basterds, Precious).

Shakespeare in Love - decent movie, good even worthy of some of its awards but not best picture and not bette than Saving Private Ryan.

I disliked the following movies that all won Best Picture - not one of them is the type I ever wanted to see again which is kind of the barometer for me generally (exceptions are like Schindler's List which was amazing but I also didn't ever want to see again...I've seen it since it parts thats all I can take).

it started in the 80s.....

Chariots of Fire - bullet to the head painful (Reds was a better movie that year)
Amadeus - not horrible but meh (The Killing Fields was much better)
Out of Africa - dry at bet, meh (the Color Purple, Witness, even Prizzi's honor were better)
Driving Miss Daisy - good lord boring as hell (every single other nominated pic was better Born on the 4th of July, Dead Poets Society, Field of Dreams, My Left Foot)

the 90s got a lot better except for this....

The English Patient - i despise this movie completely (Fargo was so much better)

I really haven't minded many since then....

Crash someone mentioned but there was nothing great that year (sorry not Brokeback Mountain even that is highly overrated, Good Night and Good Luck was very good, Capote had one great performance for sure, Munich was good...just not a standout best pic that year.

I've enjoyed many academy movies that get hate on here, including Hurt Locker and Crash. In my lifetime, the ones I didn't care for were The English Patient, Driving Miss Daisy, The Last Emperor, Out of Africa, Terms of Endearment and Gandhi.

I agree on Birdman. I sooo wish I had walked out on that movie. I knew right where it was headed and stuck around regrettably.

Forrest Gump is the worst movie to ever win Best Picture. And winning over Pulp Fiction and Shawshank makes it even more egregious.

Birdman was greatness. If you didn't like it, you didn't understand it

Crash is terrible. It's really lime watching a big budget version of a sophomore film/sociology major's idea of a "statement" movie. Just so ham-fisted and maudlin.

The Departed is a good movie and I will watch it any time it comes on, but to think that Scorscese won for it and not Goodlellas or Raging Bull-- yeah. Not in the same stratosphere.

Birdman was unwatchable. I am one of those people who think that a Best Pictureshould be accessible to any literate adult, but not necessarily Transformers. Forrest Gump makes the opposite mistake.

A movie that got robbed--Master and Commander. Should have won over the plodding LOTR spectacle. Just a perfect movie that soars all the way through.

I liked it too, but it wasn't in the same ballpark as The Social Network.

Edit: Quoted myself. SMH.

I think for a movie to be best picture it needs to be something I'd want to see more than once. Manchester would be an exception.

King's Speech was a great movie, highlighted by two excellent performances, but Social Network was masterful.

It will be even more important years from now, because as much as most of us don't want to admit it... Facebook is going to be one of the biggest companies in history.
