Good yes. Best? Not a chance.

I nominate James James, the man so nice they named him twice.

The entertainment board could have a nicest TV dads bracket and Walter White would win.

Additionally, the board could do a best silent film bracket and the final would be star wars ep 5 vs the force awakens.

Definitely the best comedic performance in tv history. Insane that he never won an Emmy. His ability to bring out little flashes of the sadness boiling just under the surface of Michael Scott's silliness, the delusion and pathos that was at the root of every little comedic bit that Michael did...it was a really incredibly nuanced performance.

Who watched the last 3 seasons and was like "Man, we need more of this show"? Even before Carrell left, the show was completely out of steam.

The good writers all bailed for Parks & Rec. The late episodes that they wrote for The Office were notably improved.

Yep. It was brutal. I think that was the NBC home office getting away from what worked and featuring the side characters more often. I'm sure they all requested it to stay in their contracts but it lost its soul.

The first 4 seasons of the office hold up as well as any first 4 in a sitcom imo.

Then letting Ed Helms take off for half a season to do Hangover 3 was pretty bad. At that point you can't argue they weren't just clinging to the sinking ship.

I'd say putting Andy in charge of the office, not letting him go, was a large source of the problem.

The show was epic in its heyday for sure. But Will and Grace, whose return stemmed this joke, had more life left in it than The Office. And it was a past dead corpse too.

You mean Ricky Gervais, right? Because his performance as the original Michael Scott really shows this sadness almost to perfection. Both did a great job though.

David Brent was much different than Michael Scott. Scott was dumb/goofy with a great heart. He would occasionally rock the episode with a moment of genuine insight or goodness, like his "never ever ever give up" line to Jim, or his refusal to fire Ryan because that's not what leaders do. He also got genuinely and undeservedly mistreated/abused by others.

Brent was often so hard to watch. Gervais was/is brilliant in the role, but there wasn't much redeeming about his character up until he finally told off his jackass buddy in the Christmas special.

Agreed. Thought about that after I posted what I did. David (forgot his name was different) was cringe worthy. I doubt network American audiences would have tolerated a Michael Scott that was a clone of David Brent.

If you go back and watch the first season, I think Michael Scott was originally more like David Brent. He was much more obnoxious and really pretty unlikable without many redeeming qualities. I think the best change they made was to make him more human and show that underneath the attention-seeking and goofiness he was actually a great person who cared about his employees immensely.

Yes, the first season of the American Office followed the first season of the British Office pretty closely. They then diverged after that and changed his character.
