It had scenes in completely black areas with water in them similar to scenes from Stranger Things and the movie Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson.

It seems like I remember there being a guy with a huge machine gun also, but I can't remember if he was a good or bad guy.

Anybody?

I can't remember a person's name five minutes after meeting them, but my mind is like a steel trap for 80's movies. However, I need a little bit more information for this.

Just a shot in the dark here but "Tron" might be your movie

Not much to go on. Maybe Altered States or Dreamscape

Doesn't appear to be any of these... it seems like I watched the same time as another movie was out called "The Gate" from 1987... so I've been looking for movies in that window of time...

Except I don't think Altered States has a dude with a machine gun.

Just watched a whole lot of Altered States on YouTube... that's not it. Really hope I didn't just dream this as a kid and now thinking it was a real film.

Army of Darkness?
Maybe it was a chainsaw instead of machine gun?

It's hard to forget a weird horror movie with Vietnam War flashbacks starring William (the Greatest American Hero) Katt, George Wendt and Richard Moll (Bull from Night Court).

I watched Army of Darkness in college. "Groovy" thought though.

It left a way bigger impression on me than House if that is the movie I am thinking I was watching... I was all of 4-5 years old.

The Gate is the one with the hole in the backyard and the eye in the palm of the hand, right? That's the one I'm talking about. Freaky ass movie that I watched way too young.

Yes. The eye in the hand part particularly scarred me. Ha.

The Gate doesn't scare me as much as Sia does but it was fun. Y'all remember the fun ones like Nightbreed and Monster Squad. Man I miss the 80s.

Those little clay figures that were running in the bedroom during the Gate left an impression for sure

As others have said, House was my first thought -- around 1:17 or so in the above link he goes into the mirror and it's total blackness... and obviously Big Ben with the machine gun.

One of those crazy movies where you really appreciate how awesome old school special-effects were:

Monster Squad was my jam. I've had the song "stuck" in my head for 20+ years now.

Wow. That's it!

That's not a machine gun, but that flying demon thing shooting that gun is the exact part I remember.

It's amazing how much Texags knows things.

As a kid, this was one of the coolest parts of any movie I watched.

-Well Steve but he doesn't count
-DOESNT COUNT!!!

I watched monster squad a ton growing up. It was on Netflix a few years ago and got to rewatch it. Not horrible and some of the scenes still hold up. The non virgin joke above was great now as an adult.
