How long do you want to ignore this user?
So when the original X-Men movie came out back in, what, 2000, whatever year it was, I never felt an desire to see it (still burned out on what had been a good foundation of comic movies with Tim Burton's Batman, and how that franchise sank as fast as the Titanic culminating in the God-awful Batman and Robin). Over the years, I've managed to see bits and pieces of several of these movies, and even saw the one where they went back to when they were young in the theater.

I finally sat down to actually watch these movies from beginning to end in recent days. Today I started X-Men Origins - Wolverine (will finish later). I noticed that Ryan Reynolds is in that movie, and he is carrying a pair of swords strapped to his back that is quite familiar. Is that supposed to be the guy that turns into Dead Pool? Surely this is not some coincidence.

He was Deadpool in the movie. But like jabba the butt, the studio realized that the first film incarnation was terrible and decided to pretend thst it never happened.

Yeah, same guy. That Wolverine movie screwed it up pretty badly though.

The new Deadpool got it right.

I'd say more but don't want to spoil anything.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I am not really a fan of the X-Men (like I am of Captain America, for instance). Decent enough movies but nothing I expect to ever watch again. Dead Pool was a hilarious movie but is not one that I will watch often. I do remember some X-Men references in Dead Pool but I guess it didn't occur to me that the guy that would become Dead Pool would be in an X-Men movie.

Taylor Kitsch did a good Gambit. And the Ryan Reynolds stuff at the beginning of the movie was great. That's how they knew an actual Deadpool movie would work.

But unfortunately the rest of the movie was a real mess.

what is this referencing?
jabberwalkie09

Most of the references in La Picina de Muerta had to do with the fact that Fox pretty much royally ****ed it up the first time with the character and how when they finally got to make the movie the budget was rather small (like how the only two x-men characters were mega sonic teenage warhead and the metal dude comment when he went to the mansion).

you gotta wonder though how they would EVER make a series of decisions bad enough that lead to creating a deadpool SPECIFICALLY designed to not be able to do what he's most famous for - talk.

basically the equivalent of rebooting the flash and making him a paraplegic

What's to wonder about? It's Fox.

Jabba the Hutt was never in the original version of SW, so they didn't have to pretend.

Yeah, and he even made a direct reference to that movie, but I can't recall it right now.

The thing about the X-Men franchise is that it was the first mega comic book franchise. By that I mean it did more than just a few sequels, but spinoffs and prequels and so on. It's still around 16 years later. The criticism that "it has no plan" is completely warranted, but it existed in a time where there was no plan, you just hoped people liked the first one enough for more and more.

Maybe the worst thing about the no-plan 2000-style X-Men franchise is that they still think Easter eggs and cameos will satisfy. That worked in 2000 and 2002, sure. But the MCU and DCEU tend to include fan favorites. They find a way, add it to the plan. These X-Men movies add a fan-favorite character as if it's throwing the fans a bone. In 2000 it was, because nobody could have predicted a sprawling cinematic universe. In 2016, people are pissed when you waste a character.

Case in point, I think Deadpool was meant as a one-off - kind of a "hey we included your favorite character on film, isn't that great?" But by 2008, 2010, 2016, it's not enough. The MCU teases War Machine so it can add War Machine, or Black Panther to set up a Black Panther film. But Fox still adds a character you've been longing to see and reduces them to a bodyguard villain role, because in 2000 that was still awesome.

but that was just an actress change, where everything else about the character stayed the same. it's weird when one character completely disappears and/or becomes another character.

and the sister just disappeared.

The original jabba was an unimpressive human in in the film (granted he got cut) and a bipedal alien in the comic adaptation of the orginal film. They changed him to the more physically impressive character in Jedi.

they shot scenes with him, but they were cut. The cut scenes got CGI'd and added into the remastered version.
