The dude not only was a superstar in what he recorded, but he wrote or helped write songs as diverse as

"I Feel for You" by Chaka Khan and "Pray" by MC Hammer

To "Nothing compares to You" by Sinead O Connor

And even "Stand Back" by Stevie Nicks.

I don't care what instrument he played or didn't play, he was as influential a musician as anyone in pop over his lifetime.

By the way, there is talk that he has up to 2000 recorded songs stored away in a vault.
He isn't going away anytime soon, someone will try and make money off of those.

He also wrote "Manic Monday" which was at #2 on the charts for The Bangles when his own "Kiss" was #1.

I was thought it was kind of crazy that he used the exact same verse melody for Manic Monday that he had used 3 years before on 1999. I assume since he had the same publisher for both there was no John Fogerty plagiarizing himself situation.

Read something yesterday that he asked Stevie Nicks to write lyrics for "Purple Rain" but once she listened to it (a 10 minute instrumental version) she felt she couldn't...it was too big and she was scared to try.

I know the Clapton quote may not be true, likely isn't.

But the outpouring from other artists and what they are saying tells you all you need to know. And from every type of music.

This one is real - just last night and its on video - Pearl Jam stopped down their show to talk about Prince:

quote:
"He was dripping with songs. They'd go into the shower after he took a shower and there'd be three songs laying there. And of course, I'm talking about Prince," Vedder said. "All of us up here were incredibly fortunate to see him a number of times over the years. Some of us got to meet him a bit. He was an intense cat. If there was anyone I thought would be playing when he was 80 or 85, it was gonna be Prince. So today was a real shock."

Vedder's speech came after Pearl Jam had played "Even Flow," the Ten single that Prince had previously performed an instrumental rendition of during a May 2013 concert at Minneapolis' Myth nightclub, a version that showcased Prince's remarkable guitar work.

"People know him from the ways he looked, and the different ways he looked, and different things he said a lot of incredible things to remember him by," Vedder added. "But I gotta tell you, and you just saw some great guitar playing. Prince was probably the greatest guitar player we've ever seen."

Later in the concert, before the first encore, guitarist Mike McCready played the resounding opening notes
of "Purple Rain"
as the lights coated the stage in all purple. "He was amazing," Vedder said of Prince. "He will be missed."

The audio is honestly not great, but here is Prince playing an instrumental version of "Even Flow" by Pearl Jam.

And he created Manic Monday out of the same verse melody of his song 4 years prior, "1999"

Two totally different songs, yet have the same melody.

Edit.. yeh, what Frick said.

Here is he with Lenny Kravtiz doing "American Woman"

others he wrote:

Sheena Easton "Sugar Walls"

Madonna "Love Song"

Alicia Keys "How Come You Don't Call Me Any More"

Sheila E "The Glamorous Life"

he wrote something for Celine Dion but I can't remember the name....

"Round and Round" by Tevin Campbell

"Jungle Love" by Morris Day and the Time

thats what Eddie Vedder meant about he was dripping with songs....prolific writer. He wrote thousands of songs. And as someone mentioned supposedly has thousands in the vault at Paisley Park recorded but never released. I saw an interview where his manager said they had recorded 50 or more videos of fully finished songs with complete production, sets, costumes, themes, etc. that were simply never released.

tmz reporting it was Percocet that he overdosed on when his plane landed.

If he was overdosing on Percocet then he might have had acute liver failure from the acetaminophen it contains. Chronic abuse of opioid/acetaminophen combo drugs are a fairly common reason for liver transplants.

A story was floating around that he was way overdue for hip replacement surgery and was in a lot of pain so I could see an OD happening.

Wow, Bowie and Prince. As mentioned - huge musical geniuses. Not only that but Prince to me was the embodiment of what "rock star" should be. I wasn't even a fan of much of his work but appreciated the artistry in it all, and the performances.

Great point....and I hope everyone knows and appreciates how talented he truly is.

I mean this is a guy that musicians (and I mean the great ones) bow down to. and he is not all about just R&B, funk, soul, or whatever., not even pop...the dude can flat out rock. He can play ANYTHING better than almost anyone.

Here is a nice sampling for you. This is the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. In the final number with an ensemble of the honorees (including Jackson Browne, Jeff Lynne of ELO, Steve Winwood of Traffic, Tom Petty, George Harrisons kid) and several others in the backing band.....They perform George Harrisons "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Its a great song and a great cover....but check out about 3:20 into when the lead guitar part is handed over to Prince. Holy Hell. Dude just freaking shreds it and brings the house down.

This might be the greatest performance of this song ever done including by Harrison or anyone else. Watch that next full 3 minutes or so till the end...dude is owning the song, the stage, the crowd, everything and he knows it smiling and just showing his emotions.

Sidenote: At the end he does something I cannot even figure out to this day....he throws his guitar up in the air seemingly straight up and walks off stage...but the guitar vanishes. It never falls back down. Some say George Harrison caught it in heaven. Its really weird check it out.

But THIS is a rock god!!!!!!!

the new "remastered" video of this performance shows a front view when he throws the guitar. you can see that it comes down between the stage and the crowd. i've been mesmerized by this "disappearing guitar" too, but i'm sure there is an orchestra pit or something in front of the stage and there is a guitar tech down there that catches it. especially since that is probably prince's favorite guitar, his hohner madcat.

Pretty sure the guy that caught him when he leaned off the stage is the guy that catches the guitar.

Holy cow. There are a lot of guitar solos that while technically amazing take you out of the song and don't fit with the rest of th band. That was Simoly incredible.

And not that it needed saying, but this performance was the cherry on top of Prince being one of the baddest MFers walking the planet at the time. Just completely dominated a stage littered with Hall of Famers.

Yes here it is the remastered version - thanks for the info.

Wide shot right as he throws it you can see it go up and come down quick. Had to be a pit there is nobody up front reaching up for it or anything. Maybe it was just padded down there. Who knows.

Also Prince exits stage left quick - like the other guys are still there removing their guitars etc. and he is gone. Too funny. He knew he owned it.
