This was a lot of fun! Ending was the weakest part, but I still would recommend this!

Also, how are you going to show a box of Fruit by the Foot and not show anyone eating any!

I liked it a lot. The inevitable discussion will come down to the ending. It's obvious that it was an entirely different movie that got an alien invasion ending tacked on to it... It was way out of place, but I still really enjoyed it. The suspense in the bunker was fantastic.

I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of criticism about the ending, and I totally get it. Like I said, it was so out of tone with the rest of the film... But that said, if this is like TC mentioned in the original thread, a new Twilight Zone type series that JJ is helming, then I am all in for more of the Cloververse.

I LOVED the first 80 minutes or so. Everything in the bunker was nails.

And I love aliens. I love serious sci-fi. I love goofy sci-fi.

But I hated that ending.

Never mind the tacked on nature of it, I just thought that entire sequence was incredibly derivative. It was like every raptor scene ever meets War of the Worlds, but the sh*ttiest versions of both.

I think what got to me the most, though, was that the ending felt emblematic of not only how adverse studios have become to making mid-budget thrillers, but more importantly, how fanboy culture has finally, utterly seeped into EVERY crevice of the industry. It felt like the movie industry basically saying this movie couldn't exist without some kind of sci-fi element or mythology. I know that probably wasn't the case in this instance, but it felt like that in the moment. Like a bunch of nerds were hired to come in and ruin a perfectly good if not phenomenally great thriller because the original version wasn't testing well with the audience from Idiocracy. I mean, at this point, we're probably a year away from a romantic comedy focusing on a relationship between a cute but down-on-her-luck art gallery assistant... and an alien.

That said, I'm probably harping on it too much. My overal reaction was definitely positive. But man, it could have been so much better with a more tone-apropriate/dialed-in finale. Now I HAVE to read the ending of that original draft. I left my laptop at the office, which has the script on it, but will dive into it first thing tomorrow.

Ending was horrible. I cannot think of a single Abrams ending that left me feeling satisfied after watching it.

I loved it, even if the ending was a little off.

One thing that bugged me was the Molotov but reddit brought up the good point that the gas was incredibly flammable as we saw what a few sparks did to that initial spray.

Really liked this movie. I agree with everyone who was disappointed with the ending. The ending didn't ruin all the scenes in the bunker for me. I just think it could have been stronger.

Exactly how I feel about it. Nothing will take away the Goodman clue of Santa Claus. Probably my favorite scene of the movie.

It was good. Ending did seem outta place. Them leaving it "open" to a sequel was odd too, because it'll be nothing like the first movie.

Trachtenburg has already said he kind of wants to leave it that way. No follow up.

For a twilight zone anthology, them leaving it open was perfect.

For a first time director whose claim to fame was a ten minute short for Portal five years ago, this was especially impressive

For sure. Really loved the look, editing, and overall energy. He's definitely one to watch.

Here's the original ending. I went ahead a screenshot the last six pages. It sounds like the events leading up to it were a bit different as well, but the basic gist comes across. Essentially, Michelle escapes the bunker and instead of the alien stuff, Howard chases her through the farm house...

THANK YOU for posting this TCTTS. That was really cool to read, and I would have liked that ending a lot more.

I think so much of the selling and marketing of this movie was around the sic-fi element, which is why I'm guessing they wanted that to play a role in the ending rather than it be based solely on Goodman and the chick battling in the end.

So how much did Abrams have to do with this? He's not the director or the writer.

Wow, great movie. Loved it.

John Goodman was amazing. The main girl was great.

You pretty much figure from the beginning that Howard is lying, but once you see the neighbor trying to get into the bunker, you really start questioning what the hell is going on. The guy is clearly crazy/psychotic, yet something is actually happening outside.

Before going in to the movie you figure it has to be one or the other, but you wouldn't think it's both.

Regarding the ending - I did not actually expect to see aliens, honestly. But once I accepted that fact, I was all in. Didn't hate it, certainly not as much as TC did, but I definitely agree it was not the strongest part of the movie.

So here's my question. Why did Howard lie to Michelle and pretend that girl was his daughter in the picture? Did he even have a daughter? And if so, why pass her off as the girl he killed?

Oh, and is this basically an anthology series now?

Ok, just realized that he was only trying to recreate the relationship with his daughter through the other girl, then through Michelle. Still not sure why he passed off the missing girl as Megan, but maybe he was legitimately crazy and convinced himself she was.

Can someone explain the ending? I never saw clover field, and don't have plans to see this, but reading this got me interested

Not much to explain... It was an alien invasion

If you're asking if it's related to Cloverfield, I'd say that it's not. But I guess it's kind of up to your interpretation.

The plot of Cloverfield was that a Godzilla like monster comes out of the ocean and attacks NYC. It was a "found footage" movie where the entire thing was shot from the perspective of a group of friends who are trying to get to safety and one of them is recording everything... So basically they didn't know what the hell was going on and the monster was never explained.

At the end the camera cuts back to an earlier scene of two of them at the beach and if you look carefully you can see something in the background falling from the sky into the ocean... I always thought that meant the monster was an alien, however apparently the viral marketing explained that it was a satellite that fell into the ocean and awoke this monster... or something like that. I always thought that was kind of stupid.

Anyways, I don't think they are supposed to be related but again, I guess it's up to you. I think the Cloverfield title is now just an anthology like the Twilight Zone.

By the way, you should watch both. They're both good movies. Although Cloverfield is jam packed with shaky cam.

John Goodman - Oscar worthy?

I know it's a long shot, and the Academy rarely recognizes sci-fi (not to mention it came out at the "worst" time of the year awards-wise), but even a nomination would be great to see.

The man has never even been nominated, which is kind of mind-blowing to me.

He basically played the same character as Kathy Bates in Misery, but with more mennace. She won the Academy Award, so I say yes, at least give him a nomination.

So why did Howard build a critical section of his bunker that he could not personally reach? Was it just a plot device? It seems like quite the oversight on Howard's part.

It wasn't on purpose, there was a pull-down ceiling entrance like to an attic, but something fell down and was blocking it.

For some reason I completely forgot about him struggling to open the hatch to that section. Thanks.

Even if you didn't like the ending, you did expect an alien or two right? The movie title has the word CLOVERFIELD in it.

What a waste of 2 hours. This movie was uninteresting and didn't captivate my attention. If I was watching it at home I would have turned it off halfway through. Just dumb. Don't waste your time.
