Which would you rather hear a cover band play?

"The Way" by Fastball or "Inside Out" by Eve 6

My vote is for "The Way".

The Way. No contest.

Interesting juxtaposition. I've been in a cover band that played them both. Both need two good singers, as they both feature an abundant harmony vocal.

Both are of very similar era and very memorable.

The Way, because then you could make a medley with Besame Mucho, since they're the same song.

That's a tough one.

I'll go with Inside Out just because. I wore that album out.

Depends on the venue for me.

but the more appropriate answer might be "yes"

Then add the following to complete the setlist:

Fastball - Out of my Head
Eve 6 - Open Road Song
Everclear - I will buy you a new life
Everclear - father of mine
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
Goo Goo Dolls - Slide
Barenaked Ladies - One Week

Man, 1998 had some punch in that niche genre.

Yep, both songs came out in 1998 (Feb and May). I like the background to "The Way":

Fastball front man Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading journalistic articles which described the disappearance of an elderly married couple, Lela and Raymond Howard from Salado, Texas, who left home in June 1997 to attend the Pioneer Day festival at nearby Temple, Texas, despite Lela's Alzheimers and Raymond recently recovering from brain surgery. They were discovered two weeks later, dead, at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas, hundreds of miles off their intended route.

Yeah. crazy story. It has been discussed on here before, and I *think* a grandchild of them might post on here? Can't remember so that may not be accurate.

Niche genre?

I'd say that genre dominated after grunge subsided and produced dozens of successful bands and even more hits..

didn't mean to sound like I was belittling it, and I probably chose the wrong choice of words. I just sort of meant, from later 97-98, there was this rush of really good alt-rock/pop dominance by some key bands. A lot of really good albums all came out at once.

or, as HNIC has so graciously put it... "white people music"

Looking at billboard alternative rock chart:
only 4 songs hit #1 spot for the first 7 months of 1999.
Only 10 songs hit #1 in 1998, 9 songs in 1999, and only an astonishing 7 in 2000.

Great longevity. This low number of #1s was repeated for several of the next 10 years after this.
I also notice a lot in these years songs go #1 in non consecutive weeks.. they didn't just come and then fall off the face of the earth.

Stark contrast from early 90s which saw a new #1 every 1-3 weeks for the most part.

I freely admit that it took me 10 years to appreciate 90s music and get over being pissed about what Nirvana did to my 80s Hairband favorites (Poison, Warrant, and yes - GnR). But in 2010 I had a breakthrough and started letting myself enjoy the hits of the 90s. I missed the vocal harmonies and lead breaks that were mass produced in the 80s, but once I got out of that "Talk Dirty to Me" mood, I realized there were plenty of harmonies in the 90s, they just didn't slap me in the face with reverb and delay. As for guitar leads and riffs, I have to listen a little harder, but they are there, usually buried under some overdriven open string chord strumming to avoid being confused with anything Mick Mars might do.

There is a big difference to me between the grunge of the early 90s and the alt rock of the mid to late 90s.

We might as well talk about the 90s some more, because these conversations end there. Even with a few great rock bands in the 2000s, music became so splintered because of the internet that unless we want to talk about the Foo Fighters all day long, the conversation will be short.

"Fire Escape" was the best song on that Fastball album by a wide margin.

This has turned into a youtube fest for me.

I went to high school at the perfect time. (1999-2003)

Such "great" music at least for a high school kid.

If you were in high school in early 2000s, then I wouldn't think you'd remember much from early 90s, which is where it all started for this genre.

I went to high school 94-98, so I was a very impressionable 10-11 year old when grunge hit and got to enjoy the whole ride.

You're correct, but I'm the baby (31 now) my brother is 33 and my sister is 38 so I was exposed to a lot of good music.

To be completely honest, I don't care much for "grunge" (Nirvana), I know that they changed the entire landscape and I'll give credit there but I really don't like Cobain's singing at all.

I'm a much more "hard rock" person now, but Sum 41, Blink 182, Offspring, Greenday (before they went so far off the deep end); those kinda bands just put out "fun" music for 14-18 year olds. I don't know what Buzz Fest # it was but the ones from 99-03 in the Woodlands were awesome.

Maybe it just seemed that way because high school was stupidly easy for me and I thoroughly enjoyed myself....

Don't equate grunge to just Kurt hah!

In order, it was AIC for me, then tie for PJ/SG (though I enjoy Ten front to back more than any SG record), then Nirvana... for the big 4 alone anyway. Hate when grunge is equated to Nirvana, let alone Kurt. There was so much more.

Those bands you listed, those are definitely from the punk rock vein...

I do like AIC.

was early Godsmack grunge?

Actually I just went to their wiki page and it classifies them among other things as post-grunge. Probably right.
