I feel like they should have just made one or two great movies, and not forced it into a trilogy.

And made a ton of different artistic choices

It's cool that you had the opportunity to see it, and I'm glad you had a good time.

That said, the movie was already bloated. I can't imagine dragging it out even longer.

I just couldn't get over how bad the cgi was in the hobbit movies vs lotr movies.

A lot of that is because a lot of LOTR was practical effects, not BS CGI.

Yeah I didn't even want to bring that part up.

The barrel ride would have been awesome if it woukd have been done with actual people in an actual river.

The whole surfing on a river of gold thing was just hirrible. The physics were as bad as a Hannah Barbara cartoon

I return to the book, those series of paintings, and my imagination. Jackson can't take those from me.

Anyway, I am glad the trilogy is done. What I would love to see is Peter Jackson go forward and make occasional movies based on stories from the Silmarrillion/Tales.

These would benefit greatly from made up romance, made up dialogue, and the dreamy/historical nature of these stories fits more with the CGI spectacle fantasy that Peter Jackson has gravitated to. It would make a lot of sense to do these entirely in CGI even.

They don't have the rights to anything else and Christopher Tolkien despises the concept of any of the stories being movies so the only way that happens is quite literally over his dead body.

The barrel ride really was when the movie lost my interest, or at least my good attitude.

It's honestly hard to believe the same people made both sets of trilogies.

For some reason I didn't think Peter Jackson was going to go full George after the first movie but he basically did.

Seems like originally Jackson was just going to produce 1 Hobbit movie while the guy from Pacific Rim directed it. So right from the start it was questionable when you go from only producing to directing, how could you possibly bring the same fire?

At the end of the day, I feel like the LOTR movies were made because of PJ's absolute passion to get one of the greatest works of literature on-screen as realistically as possible while The Hobbit movies were made to make money by altering the work to pander to as wide an audience as possible, bloating a short book into 3 movies, and using cheap CGI instead of the laborious efforts of its previous cousins in terms of crafting costumes and creatures and using real-life locations as much as possible.

It's just another reason why SW nerds like me are so giddy about the new trailer - all those places on the ground are real places on earth, that they took cameras to and filmed the actors. No "Hey, you're in the land of the wood elves, emote! emote!"
