Deftones.

Adrenaline was raw as ****. They still do the occasional raw song but a lot of their stuff has sounded softer, especially since white pony. Honestly, I like all of it.

Wouldn't be able to tell your answer by your handle or anything, right?

Can't believe no one mentioned Queen.

Basically started out as more of a hard rock band, then evolved into operatic-ish rock/pop, then went into funk/dance and later more pop. The variety over time makes them even more awesome, IMO. The BBC documentary is a must watch.

Was here to say Queen.

Also AC/DC.

Ok just kidding on the 2nd one.

Linkin Park pretty much sounds the same to me (or at least the new song I heard on the radio - I haven't bought an album since their second one).

Have they had a return to form recently, then? After their second album, they completely changed their sound from being a rap/rock/electronica hybrid to being a pop rock band. At least, based on the songs that made it to the radio.

Incubus in a bad way. Not really a fan of anything in the last decade.
This. Don't care for Fungus Amongus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is pretty good, Make Youself and Morning View are 2 of my favorite albums of all time, A Crow Left of the Murder and Light Grenades were ok, did not like their last album at all.

It was just a steady decline after Morning View.

Cage the Elephant. Loved their first album, not a bad song on it, sounded like some pissed off guys out to prove something. Their last two albums just sound whiny with a lack of motivation.

Zeppelin, except they are a unique case. They could sound wildly different within the same album.

They played around with sounds and genres more than just about any popular artists throughout history.

Fall Out Boy came to mind first, because we were just talking about this yesterday. Their new radio stuff barely sounds like the same band as the first album.

Beatles are the ultimate answer here though

Not sure how "popular" they were, but to me they were the greatest band ever: The Replacements - started out punk and ended up far different at the end.

Billy Joel changed quite a bit,

Piano Man to Glass Houses
Ganondorf

Great topic. I've thought many times about starting this thread. I love it.

Great examples have been given so far.

Similarly, I'd say Goo Goo Dolls who also started out as a Punk Band and ended up very different...

Here's an odd one... Bear with me.

dc Talk had 5 studio albums.

The first album entirely sounded like this (hip hop/gospel)... DC Talk - Heavenbound
The fifth album had ZERO trace of hip hop and was strictly an alternative album with song like this: DC Talk - It's Killing Me

Bruce Almighty

The Police went from reggae punk to new wave/pop.

The Who were kinda all over the place during their heyday.

Pink Floyd went from space rock to progressive

Spot on pick and it wasn't just one album where they changed sound completely but more of a completely linear progression throughout as the influence in the band became more Paul Westerberg and less Stinson brothers.

I'd throw in john Mayer as well, in a positive way. All his albums are different and gotten away from his original pop vibe

Yep. Morning View is my all time favorite album, and it has been disappointing to follow them ever since.

Scorpions.

From the answers in this thread, I think I'd be more interested to see who didn't change their sound and why.

Someone mentioned Fall Out Boy. I would say Maroon 5 is an even more extreme example. They actually used to be good.

A Day to Remember - This band is all over the map. One song sounds like a pop song you may hear on the radio and the next one is nothing but metalcore.

As for Incubus, this band is probably the most glaring example of all time of a band changing their sound. Every single album has been different from every single other previous album. I get that they like to experiment, but none of their stuff has ever come close to matching the music from SCIENCE, Make Yourself, and Morning View. They had an extremely unique sound to the point where you could hear a single chord from the song and know it was them. Virtually every song from those 3 albums is good. It's a shame they changed it all and moved away from that sound.

Alice in Chains has changed their style a bit from their early days as well. They used to be more alternative, but now are much more of a pure metal band. Sure they had metal songs in the past, but their primary focus was more alternative.

STP is another example of a band changing their sound album to album. Hell Scott Weiland even changes his voice from album to album where it's deep and imposing one album and high pitched the next.

Staind is another band who changed their sound as they went from metal to pop to metal again.

The Beatles and Rush. It was said earlier. If you went to R40, you could see and hear just how much they have changed. But 40 years is a long time. They went from hard rock to synths back to a classic power trio and at the end brought in the string section, from 20 minute extravaganzas to 4-5 minute pieces.

Maybe true for 'pop' music.. but there is much more music out there that isn't on the radio.

Listen to the first minute of these songs, which are off 7 albums consecutive albums, about 2001-2014. Course, if you have time, listen to the whole songs

This is what I call completely different. Incubus's sound did not that have this drastic of a change.. not even close.

Now, this band can have a range of sounds like this on one album.. but overall, their first 4 (not included in this list) albums all have a similar sound which is their beginnings.

Then, each new album really had it's own distinct, and very different, sound. #1 here shows their heavy mixed with acoustic and clean, #2 here is all chill 70s sounding prog clean rock. #3 gets about as heavy as they have been with very long songs, #4 got very progressive and complicated with open tunings and lots of keys, with chill stuff and heavy, #5 is a very eclectic mix of 70s sounding rock with a hint of very heavy and very easy listening, #6 changes direction completely with a jazzy-prog 70s sound and no more metal elements at all, and last one follows that idea but is a new approach altogether, with concentration on songwriting.

Huey Lewis and The News.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Seriously, I think most of the best ones have been covered. It's interesting that it's often kind of a catch-22. When bands evolve, many criticize the new sound and long for the old. When bands stick with one sound, they're accused of every album/song sounding the same (a la AC/DC).

The Moody Blues

I personally like trashy 80s music, so I don't mind listening to their later stuff. Their early music is some of my favorite British blues/early prog rock.

Me either. It was my first thought when I read the thread title, and I was sure it'd be one of the first few posts... It had to be done.
