I'm not sure mixing samples counts as highly complex, he is good at it though

had to bump this, finally saw this movie tonight. i honestly had no real context going in, couldn't even tell you who was in NWA beforehand, but i was absolutely in love with this movie. up there with Mad Max as my favorite of the year, i think

What's driving the R rating on this - just the language? Or is there a lot of nudity?

I'm taking 2 teenagers to this tomorrow night, and I'm not sure how many R movies they've seen. Just trying to prep myself for what kind of awkward I'm in for.

I have been looking forward to this all summer. Can't wait!
Do you live in 2015 with the rest of us? These kids have probably seen more naked people during puberty on the internet than you saw in your lifetime old guy.

They were 14 year old girls I was considering taking. They haven't seen a ton of R rated movies yet. They ended up wanting to do something else that night so we didn't go, but I think I'm going to show them Boyz in the Hood soon.

Just assumed they were teenage boys (definitely more the demo for this movie), my bad.

With the expanded field in recent years, it would surprise me if it didn't get nominated. This and Mad Max will represent the summer-blockbuster-that-was-still-artistically-competent sub-category for Best Picture.

I don't think it does...but if the competition this year is bad, and with the expanded field, it might slip in.

Saw it last weekend.

It was really good! Forgot I was watching actors, at times. The few times during the movie when they showed the actual pictures/albums, and then the post-movie scenes, took me back to those times.

Great movie, should be up for SOME award.

sound mixing, if nothing else. maybe directing, though there's no way it'd win

oh and best supporting actor for the guy who played young snoop

Obviously late to the party, but I watched this tonight with the SO. It was great. I followed the music almost religiously in the 80s and 90s, so I was quite nostalgic while watching. The only very minor complaint is they left out a lot of the late music that Eazy-E made.

And apparently the defamation lawsuit by former manager Jerry Heller against the producers was allowed to proceed.

Really well done and enjoyable. But it's hard not to think this is a sign of the times for verbal and physical violence towards the same people that protect them at concerts and on a daily basis. Without the police none of those thugs would not be where they are now. But they all exploited an niche and are doing well financially so good on them.

agreed. but not for the reason in your thinking. rather simplistic thought process in this post.

Just a comment:

I am not a rap fan, or NWA fan. I just watched the movie from the DVR. I can see how it works as I used to be in the music business as a promoter in Austin.

Very tough business to make money in, deal with all the personalities, the booking agents, the contracts,...

Finally figured out it all a dime a dozen.

One client is one of the best Fender Strat players I ever saw, and we came very close to breaking it big. Had a hit on the radio in Europe, and he was compared to Johnny Winter in skills.

Things happen,...the long hours, touring, families, babies, merchandising, etc....

It is hard to keep bands together, my client had a three piece southern rock power trio that members opened for national touring acts.

9/11 happened, the band said they aren't flying to Europe,...I got out

I watched this last night for the first time as well and thought it was fantastic. The three actors they got to play Dre and E were great, but Cube's son stole the show. Great movie all around though.

I caught it on HBO, and while I enjoyed it, I don't think it was Oscar worthy as some people originally said. One thing I found interesting is that I remember at the time NWA came out, everyone thought they were just jackasses who cussed a bunch. No one really realized how smart they actually were. Dre's and Cube's success outside of the rap world shows they weren't just some thugs from the hood, but rather extremely smart businessmen.

I watched it this weekend on HBO for the first time as well. Thought it was awesome and very well done.

Did anyone else see the door for a sequel being left blatantly wide open?

The small bit of Pac and Snoop we got to see and Dre walking out on and saying to Suge 'I'm gonna call it Aftermath'. To me they could easily do a sequel and go into the whole East Coast/West saga and also go into Dre and Aftermath signing of Eminem.

i'm sure their one-sided story of how the cops treated them is completely true.

while i detest the current environment/treatment/attitudes around our police departments, i'm not sure lapd in that timeframe is where you want to hang your hat for that argument.

Wait, if my post is political, it's simply speaking to their message, so I guess that was political?
