How long do you want to ignore this user?
Probably was discussed ad naseum after the release but I rewatched GOTG last night and it piqued my interest. Gunn has probably dropped some more clues since then as well.

So we know what his mom said on her deathbed: "he was an angel, composed of pure light"

We know he hired Yondu to pick up Quill and bring him, which Yondu defied

We know he is not of Terra

Gunn has said its not jason of Spartax.

So, are the possibilities endless or is the light bulb going off for any of you?

Most people think it's some dude named Adam Warlock who looks like this:

I don't know anything about him other than he looks ridiculous but will probably be awesome in a movie because Marvel

He was originally from Earth, but hightails it for space pretty quickly. Definitely not considered an Earth hero.

Yeah the unitard with cape isn't a good luck for many. Doesn't hide his thunder well.

I thought his dad was the super powerful emperor of some alien race.

I have 2 theories

1. GotG find the time gem and Quill travels back in time to find his mom, only to have her fall in love with him and he's his own father......boom.

2. Adam has one of the gems (space?) And could very easily be used as a jump into Infinity Wars by having it and Thanos wanting it. This would also tie GotG into Avengers via Infinity Wars.

I think the leading theory is that it will be Adam Warlock, who (as far as I know) is often the possessor of the Soul Gem. Since we've seen 4 of the 6, it would make sense for it to be introduced to the MCU through the next Guardians movie.

I imagine that will require a bit of tinkering with the backstory, but that's fine. The director has said that, for Guardians 2, he wants Peter to be the only Earthling on the team. That means it's likely we won't be getting Nova any time soon. But if Adam Warlock is an ancient being, and not from earth, he'd fit all the requirements.

That's J'Son of Spartax, which is true in the comics. But like the OP said, James Gunn has said its not going to be him in the movies.

This is the only answer that makes sense. Now we can connect Indiana Jones, Star Wars and the MCU.

Except Indy would have been like 90 years old when Peter Quill was born.

Maybe Shia could be the father.

In which case, it's probably best that he was only raised by his mom and then orphaned.

Indy is a decedent of Han Solo and unkowningly has the force.

Han never had the Force....

Edit: NM I'm an idiot. His kids would have it though....

I'm curious to see how they handle Adam Warlock in the movies. Vision straight up stole his backstory (perfect being created by a megalomaniac genius who only becomes a cryptic super duper hero due to an Infinity gem)

Aside from making the gem in his head an infinity gem, that has always been Vision's backstory.

The cocoon was an easter egg for Adam Warlock, which is who is speculated may end up being Quill's father.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
So why does a 100% human (terran) have a cocoon?

Wouldt it make sense that Peter's mother is a human, father an alien who visited and left earth (she does keep calling her son her "little starlord", implying she knows his ancestry is off planet). I mean peter was able to touch the inifinity stone for a moment without insta-death like a normal non-powered being would.

Unless they are claiming his mother is special, but she isnt the one in the cocoon...

So what exactly is the cocoon thing anyway?

Adam Warlock is on the weird end of the Marvel spectrum, so some of this you are just going to have to accept without much justification.

Adam Warlock is not a 100% human, exactly. He is an artificially created humanoid lifeform created by a group of scientists called The Enclave. He represents the absolute perfection of the human genome, which for some reason means he has superhuman abilities, including manipulating cosmic energy for flight among other things. He can also create and enter a cocoon to regenerate and repair any damage he has suffered. While he is in the cocoon, he can't come out until he is fully healed or someone physically opens the cocoon to wake him up early. He voluntarily came out of the cocoon early once to save a being called the High Evolutionary (who had essentially become his adoptive father) which ended up causing him to lose some of his powers. In return, the High Evolutionary gave him the Soul Gem.

So calling Warlock a human doesn't really hit the mark. Humans are essentially Neanderthals to him. He left Earth very early on in his life and has been associated with the cosmic affairs of the Marvel Universe ever since. He is usually noted as representing the antithesis of Thanos (avatar of Life vs. the avatar of Death) although they have not always been strictly enemies.
