Accepting Emma Stone as an Asian-American in Aloha requires a certain suspension of disbelief and no small amount of magical thinking. In the Hawaii-set romantic comedy-drama, she portrays Allison Ng: an aggressively peppy Air Force fighter pilot of Chinese-Hawaiian-Swedish decent who falls for an existentially angst-y military contractor played by Bradley Cooper.

But in order to process this idea of Stone as a bi-racial character, as someone whose genetic lineage can be traced back to the Middle Kingdom by way of Polynesia, you must first get past the obvious stumbling blocks: her alabaster skin and strawberry blond hair, her emerald eyes and frecklespast the star's outwardly unassailable #Caucasityif only because the movie hammers home her cultural other-ness in just about every other scene.

quote:
If Ng's Hawaiian pedigree is so crucial to the movie's plot, why not simply cast an actressOlivia Munn for instancewhose racial profile is within the genetic ballpark? Or, if the endgame was to hire a proven box-office draw like the Birdman and Amazing Spider-Man co-star, why not back-burner the issue of Ng's race while focusing dialogue around her cultural heritage as a native Hawaiian?

CKs grandmother is hispanic, other than that he is about as white as it gets.

But if Emma Stone wants to be Chinese/Hawaiian/Swedish in this movie, can't say I have a problem with it.

Say what you will about his movie/casting, but Crowe is one of the nicest, most upstanding guys in the business, as evident by his letter/apology below. Also, when mentioning all this, everyone conveniently keeps leaving out the facts that A) the character is only supposed to be 1/4 Asian, which I can buy, and B) is based on real life red-head/quarter Asian. I agree that someone like Olivia Munn would have likely been the better choice, but still, this whole thing is getting blown WAY out of proportion...

quote:
From the very beginning of its appearance in the Sony Hack, "Aloha" has felt like a misunderstood movie. One that people felt they knew a lot about, but in fact they knew very little. It was a small movie, made by passionate actors who wanted to join me in making a film about Hawaii, and the lives of these characters who live and work in and around the island of Oahu.

Thank you so much for all the impassioned comments regarding the casting of the wonderful Emma Stone in the part of Allison Ng. I have heard your words and your disappointment, and I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice. As far back as 2007, Captain Allison Ng was written to be a super-proud Hawaiian who was frustrated that, by all outward appearances, she looked nothing like one. A half-Chinese father was meant to show the surprising mix of cultures often prevalent in Hawaii. Extremely proud of her unlikely heritage, she feels personally compelled to over-explain every chance she gets. The character was based on a real-life, red-headed local who did just that.

Whether that story point felt hurtful or humorous has been, of course, the topic of much discussion. However I am so proud that in the same movie, we employed many Asian-American, Native-Hawaiian and Pacific-Islanders, both before and behind the camera including Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele, and his village, and many other locals who worked closely in our crew and with our script to help ensure authenticity.

We were extremely proud to present the island, the locals and the film community with many jobs for over four months. Emma Stone was chief among those who did tireless research, and if any part of her fine characterization has caused consternation and controversy, I am the one to blame.

I am grateful for the dialogue. And from the many voices, loud and small, I have learned something very inspiring. So many of us are hungry for stories with more racial diversity, more truth in representation, and I am anxious to help tell those stories in the future.

Thanks again,
Cameron Crowe

A random author writing a negative article about a movie they've never seen, based on a racial stereotype, completely ignoring the point of the story?

This is not the kind of high brow criticism I've come to expect from Entertainment Weekly.

Certainly possible. I have 4 half Asian grandchildren. No way you would know one of them was anything, but 100% Caucasian and one of the others would have to look real close.

In the end, she can play anything she wants. Cute girl.

Saw this last night. First of all, Stone's character didn't bother me a bit... If I hadn't read about the controversy beforehand I never would have given it a second thought.

The movie itself was fine. Not great, not bad. Lots of great actors with underutilized roles, but cooper and stone were awesome as always. I felt like the plot was too scattered for this to be a "really good" film, but it did have heart

The only thing people should protest about this movie is the fact that it's terrible. I had no idea what it was supposed to be about for the first 30 minutes or so.

Don't go see it.
