Yes, it was at 0% for quite a while. The comments berating the first critic to give it a positive review were pretty hilarious.

No. The politics board would tell you this movie is absolute sh** but a $30 mil budget against domestic+foreign ticket sales + DVD rentals + PPV + DVD sales + licensing to cable tv + etc......profits are made and investments are returned.

Armond White, the only person in the world that doesn't like the Toy Story movies. I'm not saying they are the greatest movies ever made, but if you don't like Toy Story, there is something wrong with you.

Not quite, the theaters get a cut, and then advertising isn't usually figured into production costs. But it is probably only 5-10 million away, which is pretty remarkable.

It is bad, but if you like the concept of Paul Blart, which I think is probably funnier in concept than execution, then you will laugh.

but if you're going looking for some sort of 'story' you're going to the wrong movie.

Pain and Gain. Actually a pretty fun dark comedy. Michael Bay's best movie since Bad Boys II.

This. I feel like there are a ton of movies that people are begging for a sequel for or take years to get people on board, but then some movies like Blart get greenlit ASAP. But I did think Kevin James in King of Queens was hilarious, not a fan of his movies.

2.5X the production budget usually recoups prod budget and P&A costs.

I might be completely wrong here, but I think in many cases (for example Paul Blart) you have to look at who made the movie (Adam Sandler's Happy Madison productions) and realize that there are deals in place for certain producers, etc. that a certain number of movies are pre-approved for them when they sign deals with a studio. Just read the leaked Sony emails that shows Sandler's movies are hated by most Sony employees themselves, but the deal they made with Sandler means he gets to make them regardless.

Steadi, TC, Simplebay and others can explain it much more elequently than I just did. But it boils down to clout and multi-picture deals a lot of times, unfortunately.

And I agree, Dredd is defintely worth watching and deserving of a sequel.

I believe Happy Madison only has a 1st look deal with Sony. I think Blended was the first one Sony passed on and even then the movie made money. As long as the movie brings in money it floats the studios until their next tentpole comes out.

But I just work production so that's none of my business.
