When blue duck came back to steal Laurie, he only pistol whipped newt. Does this strike anyone else as out of character?

He is made to believe he kills and rapes as he pleases. And it backed up by killing of roscoe, janie, and joe. Obviously newt was important character, but it makes no sense to me why he wouldn't have been killed. Also not sure why this bothered me when I was watching it for the 1000th time the other night.

I think it was just that he saw Newt as a boy that was of no threat or interest to him, essentially he was too lazy to kill him or thought pistol whipping him was more fun. Or maybe he started pistol whipping him and then just decided there was no need to kill him and he could leave a living witness to let others know what he had done.

Maybe he didn't want Call on his ass which he would have if he killed Newt. He probably figured Gus wouldn't come after Lori. She even told him she wasn't with Gus.

I would have to say that Blue duck probably felt that newt wasn't worth the bullet as well he wanted gus to come looking and newt would ensure that gus knew who stole lori.

I just started reading Lonesome Dove so I can't answer your question and haven't read the replies.

A while ago I finally decided I needed to watch the series, but decided I wanted to read the book first. Then I realized I didn't want to just read Lonesome Dove. I stated with Dead Mans Walk, moved on to Comanche Moon, and just started on Lonesome Dove last week.

DMW lagged a bit towards the last 1/4, but other than that very good reads and can't wait to really get into LD! Great bit of Western literature.

Do yourself a favor and quit at Lonesome Dove.

When it comes to Lonesome Dove, if you read the book first just keep in mind that some of the characters are way different than the way they are cast in the miniseries.

The way it went for me, I saw the miniseries when I was a teenager and I loved it. Then several years later I got the book Streets of Laredo as a gift and I read it. It made zero sense to me because the Pea Eye in the miniseries and the Pea Eye in the book are of two very different ages.

The same goes for Jake Spoon and Deats.

If he shot Newt the gunshot might be heard and have Gus and Call on his trail more quickly than he would like while trying to escape with a captive.

A simple whack to the head gave him more time to make a clean getaway.

C'mon man, I spent a good 5 seconds developing my theory and then you have to come along and poke holes in it...

I've always just assumed that Blue Duck figured it was simply easier & quieter to dispatch Newt in non-lethal fashion with his primary goal being abducting Lorena & being long gone before Gun &/or Call came to check on the lovely Miss Wood.

I'll buy the not shooting him as it gives him more time to get away without notice . Just seems like he would have killed him similar to how he killed roscoe and crew. He knew Gus would come after him. He told Lori at the watering hole "he's coming, don't know wether it's for you or for me, but he's coming". He wasn't scared of call coming after him. He said as much in the prison "..and you never even had a good look at me".

I actually think he wanted Gus to track him down so he could square off with him, and that's why he sent Newt's horse back to the herd without a rider. When Blue Duck brings Lorrie back to his gang, he warns them a ranger will be coming around, so he knew Gus would be on his trail. This is the way I've always taken it.

Meh, if characters did the common sense thing all the time, movies would be pretty boring.

My wife gave me the whole series as a wedding gift. I enjoyed the books but Lonesome Dove is so much better than the rest. Outside of a insignificant details, the book and movie are almost identical.

from Comanche Moon - Captain Inish Scull

"Lust is the doom of man I've often forsworn it myself, but my resolve won't hold," the Captain said, stepping close to Jake. "You're a young man, take my advice. Beware the hairy prospect. Do that and improve your vocabulary and you'll make a fine citizen.Once you start tupping with slavering sl*ts like her there's no recovery: just look at me! I ought to be secretary of war, if not president, but I'm doing nothing better than chasing heathen red men on the g**d**n dusty frontier, and all because of a lustful rich sl*t from Birmingham! Bible and sword!"

I agree that the prequels and sequel are not necessary reads. They don't really add anything to the masterpiece that is Lonesome Dove.
