Not sure if this qualifies as underrated or not because they might just not be very good actors, but I'm surprised Kyle Chandler, Zach Gilford (Saracen from FNL), and Dominic West (McNulty from The Wire) don't get more work. I had no effing clue McNulty was British until I looked at his Wiki.

I'd put Noah Emmerich in my underrated group.

I didn't think Dominic west was that great in the Wire. But that was probably because he was terribly hammy with his drunk scenes.

Plus if you watch the Wire on Amazon prime you see that his character changes every season. He's not the same guy from season to season. And it's not because the character evolved.

But that could be the writing and the directing.

I agree on his drunk scenes, but I thought he was really good everywhere else. I actually think the acting is not that great overall in The Wire.

I never really noticed, but my wife walked through the room once when I first started watching the Wire, doesn't even look up, and says,

"Wow, that guy's attempt at an American accent is rough..."

Jake Gyllenhaal. I think that most of us still have that imagine of Day After Tomorrow / Prince of Persia / Bubble Boy... but that MFer can act. Check out Nightcrawler, Prisoners or End of Watch

Ben Foster is a great one!

He killed it in:
30 Days of Night (creepy role)
310 to Yuma (stone cold gun slinger)
Pandora (weak plot, good acting)

He was the only bright spot in Alpha Dog.

How was his role in Lone Survivor?

More recently, The guys in Mark Baum's fund are all people I think we are going to see more of soon.

I had the same thought. The guy playing the number 2 with the cell phone on his belt was terrific.

Not sure she's underrated, but Tilda Swinton has got to have the widest range of an actor - male or female - and always nails her roles.

Matthew MacFayden is pretty damned underrated. Great actor great screen presence, but not so many high profile films and roles.

So many listed here are held in extreme high regard.. I don't get it.

I've never met anyone in real life who has a clue who Brian Cox is. It usually takes listing 3-4 roles before I get one where they can say "ooh, that guy".

Damien Lewis for me. Loved him in Band of Brothers and Life (with Sarah Shahi, who I also think is great).

Also think Giovanni Ribisi is really versatile.
