And it's "The Cabin in the Woods" writer/director Drew Goddard.

I think this is an outstanding choice. "Cabin" is one of, if not THE most original horror films I've seen in the past decade.

Also wrote Clover Field
Also wrote World War Z

But as long as Kevin Feige is involved I have no worries.

World War Z was doomed from the moment they decided to not follow the format of the book and make it a PG-13 action flick, which was Pitt's intention from the beginning. I don't fault Goddard for that film.

I'm really intrigued to see how they approach this series, it's tough to pull off a guy running around Hells Kitchen in a red leather suit.

As mentioned Feige has been pretty spot on in his handling of all the Marvel properties so I've got faith in them doing it right.

Just FYI, Goddard didn't technically write World War Z. He and Damon Lindelof were brought on board to fix the ending, after filming had wrapped, before the infamous reshoots. So he basically had a hand in saving the movie. Was a pretty great ending, IMO, considering what came before it, and the circumstances surrounding his hiring.

Goddard is also apparently the biggest Daredevil fan there is. He's been consumed with the character since he was a kid, and this is basically his dream job. I really do think they're gonna knock this out of the park.

(And not to be "that guy," but that article's from November. Been news for a while now. Goddard's probably fairly close to completing the writing at this point.)

I noticed the date too Don't think it's been discussed though and definitely a relevant Entertainment board topic.

I actually have yet to see WWZ, but the Vanity Fair writeup about the making of is a fascinating read if you haven't already seen it.

Not to nitpick but the final tense scene in WWZ was the worst for me. It was the scene where Pitt was isolated but had a camera on him from the Drs and they could call a phone in the next room. All he had to do was write on a paper "call the phone when I show you a drug that wont kill me" and put it in front of the camera. Then go one-by-one with the drugs and there is zero threat of pitt dying.

You can say that about any superhero movie. I really hope this is good. Daredevil is my favorite comic book character, but unfortunately, people only know him from the Ben Affleck movie. IMO, he's the most well written character in the Marvel universe during the last 30 years. But it needs to be dark and it needs to be violent. That's the only way its going to work. Incorporate the stories from the Frank Miller years.

Very true, and I think that any character you can use a lot of darkness and shadow with (Daredevil and Batman come to mind) is probably a bit easier to pull off.

I'm not really familiar with the Daredevil comics, any recommended reading?

I wouldn't read anything prior to when Frank Miller took over in the early 80s with the debut of Elektra. DD suffered through some pretty terrible writing in the 60s and 70s and Miller took over and basically ignored all the previous material. He did 20 issues or so, which you can buy collected in graphic novel form, left for DC to do Batman, then came back and did the Born Again story line, which is considered by many to be among the greatest story lines in comic book history. Daredevil Yellow, which was written in 2001, gives an updated and much better version of the Daredevil origin story. Also, the Brian Michael Bendis run from 2001-2006 rivals Miller's work and won a few awards.

Thanks, I'll check some of those out.

Well, ain't that somethin'? I browse movie websites all the time and that was literally the first I'd heard of this news. Otherwise, I would have started this thread in November. I saw the article linked at the bottom of another site's page and followed it. Weird.

I see on his imdb page that he has also been tapped to write the upcoming "Sinister Six" Spiderman spinoff which will focus on the bad guys. Looks like he's a popular guy for Marvel....

So many good takes on DD over the years. Miller, Nocentti, Bendis, Brubaker, Waid. Any one of those runs would make great storylines they could use for the show. I'd love to see some of the classic storylines of the Miller run, but done with the freshness of the current Waid run personally.

I fell in love with Daredevil in 1987-1988 (I believe that was during Nocenti's run) and he's been one of my favorite characters since. I hope this show does him justice.

Looks like all of Waid's run are on sale this weekend, planning to pick up a handful:

Rumor is that Marvel wants Dexter actor Michael C. Hall to play Daredevil.

Hmmm, I had not considered Michael C. Hall, that's an interesting choice, albeit a bit older than I was expecting but I can see it.

Hmm... Interesting. I'd tune in regardless, but I'd love to see how Michael C Hall portrays a costumed superhero (he basically did as Dexter, sans the costume). I always was hoping he'd land a big villain role though.

Daredevil officially cast... Charlie Cox, best known as Owen Slater from Boardwalk Empire.

Really solid hire in my opinion. He was a badass with great screen presence in BE.

LOVED him in Boardwalk Empire. His death was a shock.

Okay. Good casting.

I mentioned this in another thread, but worth mentioning here - Steven S. DeKnight is the new showrunner with Goddard moving on. He ran Spartacus, and while Daredevil will unfortunately not have the same amount of blood and boobs as Spartacus (being Disney and all), the plot and political intrigue of Spartacus was incredible and I take this a great sign.

Maybe cast Lucy Lawless?

Only thing I know him from is Stardust so seems like an odd choice, but I'll trust the rest of you

Not much to go on, but definitely some origin stuff. Reminds me of the Frank Miller miniseries that he did in the 90s.

Meh.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's directly adapted from this costume in Man Without Fear.

It's ok to "meh" this costume because it's obviously an outfit he slapped together for his first excursion fighting crime. It's like in Spider-Man when he made his wrestling outfit out of pajamas basically.

The costume will evolve over time and I'm sure he'll be in a more traditional DD costume soon enough. They'll probably make a joke along the way of "what, did a blind man make your costume?"

Good to know Rogue, thanks for the info. Loved DD as a kid, just don't know a lot of his history and different takes on his origin.

Man Without Fear is a Frank Miller origin story but it focuses very heavily on the relationship between Daredevil and Electra. Considering Electra is not part of the show (yet), I don't think they are going to be drawing much from that particular story.

Man Without Fear spends a lot of time dealing with his relationship with his father, Jack, and his working for the mob. So I expect to either have flashbacks or a whole episode devoted to a young Matt Murdock, how he became blinded, how his father was killed, etc. Also, Man Without Fear dedicates a lot the story to Murdock's training with Stick (who is already cast), so the image with Murdock in the black sweats is in that timeline.

Plus, Elektra is gonna show up at some point, so they could allude to her without directly referencing her.

I just looked again at IMDB and Rosario Dawson's character still hasn't been listed, so she very well may be Elektra.

Dawson was in Clerks II. Sort of random Kevin Smith link.
