diamond,

I could name hundreds, maybe thousands. Is there any particular type that you are looking for? Most of what you listed looks like top 40. There are numerous lists out there on the internet for this type of material, like the one on the left hand side of this page by decade that takes you to a year by year list...

Buck:

I'm positive, here is the Kewwwwl album cover it came from...

Speaking of the Captain and Tennile they came to Rudder Tower in about 76 or 77 and I took my future wife to see them. The whole band wore Aggie shirts and the Captain never said a word but he wore a cool pair of shades and his little captain's hat. No one yelled "uncover" at him either.

Here's another one for considerations:

"I've Got A Brand New Pair Of Roller Skates (You've Got A Brand New Key)" by Melanie Safka

Whatever became of great music like that?

I guess more like the one hit wonders because i have the Rock stuff like all Zeplin, BOC, BTO, CCR, Rush, ACDC, Earth Wind Fire, Steve Miller. I bought almost all of the best of's from these artist but it is the obscurish types I am interested in such as Ozark MOuntian. I did not know their song was top 40. But neglect the songs like disco duck...that song was a farse.

I am just interested in finding songs that are not commonly being played on an oldie station today still. But the songs you would rarely hear.

Such as Tiny Dancer by Elton John. You know I have all three best of Elton John Discs but none of them contained Tiny Dancer and I forgot about that song until the movie Almost Famous featured it.

Thats what I refering to

Oh yeah. TAMU 91 SOngs that you forgot but now remember.

"Whatever became of great music like that?"

Well it depends on what you mean by "great" - I certainly thought alot of those songs were funny back then, but they only had humor value for me.

In the late 70's I was a Jr. High aged KISS fan. My whole room was wallpapered in KISS posters.

I'm missing something, Buck. The song I'm thinking of is titled Beach Baby, and the lyrics, in part, go something like this....

Beach Baby, Beach Baby, here in the sand....

I'm not saying I liked it. The man was asking for forgotten '70's songs, and I bet that one wouldn't have been on anybody's list.

How about strawberry alarm clock..

I think that is the name of the song....

Or was it strawberry letter #69

Oh well I am more familiar with todays music.

Songs from artist like Black Rebel Motorcycle club
or the tyde, the warlocks, or the datsuns...

Funny thing is in 30 years if i'm still alive..i'll be posting for people to name those forgotten songs from the bands i just listed.

I better start getting on with my CD collection...But I forgot I was boycotting the RIAA by not purchasing any more CD's

"Incense and Peppermints," Strawberry Alarm Clock

"Strawberry Letter 23," Brothers Johnson

I like 'em both, but think that the 2nd is an absolute classic.

quote:
AMG REVIEW: Probably the last great psychedelic soul single of the '70s - by 1977, both psychedelia and soul were on the outs, chased by punk and disco - the Brothers Johnson's version of "Strawberry Letter 23" is a note-perfect copy of Shuggie Otis' 1971 original, from his fine Freedom Flight album. The only difference is that this version was produced and arranged by the great Quincy Jones, who by 1977 was polishing the ultra-slick arrangement and production techniques that would make his own solo albums (1981's The Dude, etc.) and more famously, Michael Jackson's classic Off the Wall and Thriller sound so thrilling. This version of "Strawberry Letter 23," unlike Otis' muddy original, is a miracle of musical space, with every instrument set off in its own glittering, velvet-lined display case, yet somehow Jones manages, in subtle cues like the exaggerated breathiness of the "ooo-woo-ooo-whoo-hoo" backing vocals and the slightly-too-prominent placement of the glockenspiel hook in the final mix, to give the whole song a sonic depth and richness that keeps it from sounding too sterile and perfect. And when Lee Ritenour bursts out with that just-right, skittering, reverb-and-phasing-heavy guitar solo near the end, the hallucinatory soundscape is complete. Shuggie Otis' original is a marvel, no question, but this version of "Strawberry Letter 23" is indisputably the classic. — Stewart Mason

Okay I did some heavy cogitating here is my more expanded list of songs that annoyed the hell out of me or were pretty funny. Only had to look the artists up on a few of them:

Jim Stafford's "I don't like Spiders and Snakes" and " Wildwood Weed"
Randy Newman's "Short People"
Merri Wilson's (she was managed by the drummer and lead singer of the Texas band Bloodrock who had a one hit wonder called "DOA" but that was in the 60s) "Telephone Man"
Daddy Dewdrop "Chick a Boom"
Loudon Wainwright III's "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road"
Country Joe & the Fish's "Fixing to Die Rag"
Rick Drees' "Disco Duck"
Edgar Winter Group "Frankenstein"
Billy Paul "Me and Mrs. Jones"
Hue's Corporation "Rock the Boat"
Helen Reddy "I am Woman"
Jean Knight "Mr. Big Stuff"
LaBelle "Lady Marmalade"
Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods "Billy Don't be a Hero"
War "Why Can't we be Friends?"

Most of those when they came on the radio I would cringe and change stations.
