Well I'd probably start from the beginning and watch them in order.

Overall very positive. Like all episodic TV, there are dud episodes and the end to the series is somewhat of a let down. Still an excellent and fun Sci-Fi series, the good far outweighs the disappointing end.

Considering its all chronological, what order were you led to believe was an alternative?

The only thing I would worry about is BSG:Razor episodes/mini-movie and how that fits into the timeline.

Then after you are done with series you can watch BSG: The Plan, where it takes you through the Cylon experience of the series.

I was under the impression that some series' were prequels. Was curious if I should watch those in the order they aired, or if I should throw them in somewhere.

Caprica was a terrible spinoff. Don't bother with it.

I actually was OK with Caprica. Not the quality of BSG but still interesting. Having said that, I never bothered to watch the last 3-4 episodes that never made it on air. Guess I need to find them and watch them one of these days...

This.

Caprica was just a "prequel" in the sense that they wanted to capitalize off the bsg universe and the only compelling time/story would be beforehand.

So do I need to go back and start with the 1978 eps to understand what's going on?

While the original series has it's charms from a strictly nostalgic point of view, unless you are old enough to have any memories of that series, it'd probably be best if you don't even bother with it.

When I was 8, it was cool. Once I grew up.....not so much.

And no, the new series is a reboot. Viewing the original is not necessary.

Ignore the 70s series.

Watch the 1978 series only to decide if you'd rather have Athena or Cassieopia.

I'm a huge BSG guy. Love it. Usually rewatch it once a year. Here's what I normally tell folks.

It's a chronological story, not a 'monster of the week' type show. As such, not watching in order will be very confusing.

Start with the pilot from the 2004 series (its a 2 part miniseries). If you love it, watch the next 80 episodes and enjoy the ride. If you leave the pilot feeling meh or even negative, don't bother, the show isn't for you.

I tried to like it, but it was just an edgy soap opera in space. I gave up in season 2.

Watch the re-boot start to finish.

The 1970 is actually worth a watch. Its 70s acting and visuals, but in many ways the show was ahead of its time.

Caprica was ok. You could see some of the themes and ideas the show wanted to go with, but I don't think the execution really came off (in terms of writing). Some surprisingly good acting, but it never really seemed to mesh.

the BSG soundtrack is FANTASTIC! All 4 seasons, although I think season 3 is my favorite, mostly for the cover of "All Along the Watchtower".

The leitmotif during the Adama's father/son scenes is my favorite suite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4hSkWmxHrA

Agreed. Thought it was well done and quite a surprise when it was first introduced.

Bear McCreary - All Along The Watchtower (Long Mix)

I've watched the ending of the series a couple of times now and I'm less disappointed with the way it unfolded. The series had its ups and downs but was pretty damn solid.

That said, the series still has one of the greatest WTF television sci-fi moments for me during Exodus Pt.2.

Make sure to start with the mini-series. If you don't care for that or don't care with the series at the end of "33" just move on to something else.

Kara Remembers was my favorite episode and song.

I dont want to spoil anything for the OP (look Im growing) but that episode was really well done.

Yup that one was nuts!

I first started watching the show when season 3 was airing; I caught up on all the episodes via old-school-DVDs-in-the-mail-Netflix and then watched season 4 live in college. But, it's been so long that I had forgotten so many of the plot twists (identity of all the skinjobs, who lives/dies, etc.) and it feels like I'm watching it for the first time again!

My impression of the series... I got teary eyed watching some parts of the final episode. It's not because it was the best written show ever (some parts were duds, some were brilliant), but the cast was always spot on and had really great chemistry. When the show concluded I really felt the "goodbyes" and I definitely got caught up in it.

One of my favorite shows of all time for sure.

The acting and cast chemistry as great, as well as the visuals.

Honestly, I felt like they got lazy on some of the story elements (Moore even admitted as much). I think the Kobol mythologies should have been fleshed out more.

Probably one of the most awesome scenes of television...
