Not sure when reviews will hit, but my brother saw an early screening of Jurassic World in LA last night and thought it was pretty bad. Jokes that fell flat. He said on the plus side, the kid wasn't annoying. Don't have a lot more detail to share than that.

Just throwing that out there. As a disclaimer, he wasn't a fan of 2 or 3, just 1.

It's more the point that your major point to pass along was that the jokes felt flat. In a movie that's 97.5% about CGI dinosaurs. It's like if I had seen Fast & Furious 7 two days earlier and came to TexAgs to say "It wasn't that great, the costume design wasn't up to par."

In a lot of ways, Jurassic World reminds me of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The thing we were rooting against in the first movie (the T-800 Terminator, the T. rex, the Velociraptors) now have new models that are even more dangerous, so now we find ourselves rooting for the old model against the T-1000 and the Indominus Rex. (Yes, the same T. rex from the first Jurassic Park is in Jurassic World.)

The film never captures the sense of awe it is telling us that we lost; it reminds me of Tomorrowland in that Jurassic World is a movie that browbeats you with what you're doing wrong as opposed to presenting a vision of someone doing it right. We don't experience awe, the film says, because we're jaded and distracted, but then the film fails to give us a single awe-filled moment.

Jurassic World is like a bottle of flat soda that's been sitting in the sun - the caffeine and sugar will still do their thing, but the drink has lost all of its desired taste and fizz. Dinosaurs are always cooler than not having dinosaurs, and the movie moves at a fast enough clip that it never drags. But it also never works, and Jurassic World ends up as a generic bore that will, I think, be more interesting to dissect in the future than to ever actually watch.
