Is there major character on tv who has ever been more evil than Livia Soprano?

I can't think of one

really?

I don't think she is nearly as evil as Livia.

Skylar White while annoying, isn't evil... that's ridiculous.

And OP, have you seriously not watched Game of Thrones? Or are you just trying to keep it in a realistic context?

I guess I just see him differently than Livia. And I don't really have a reason why.

But, last night I saw the episode where Tony learns she tried to have him whacked and she has the stroke. And that face at the end when she was being wheeled out was just pure evil. It was brilliant acting without ever saying a word.

Hmm... It's been years since I've watched the Sopranos, and I've been wanting to rewatch. Now with James Gandolfini's death I probably will. But, I didn't even remember her trying to kill Tony, I just remember they had a terrible relationship and she was very manipulative.

I'll see what I think when I watch again.

Other really evil characters:

Walter White - BB (but he still has some anti-hero traits I suppose)
Gyp Rosetti - Boardwalk Empire
Marlo and Chris - The Wire

But I think Joffrey is gonna go down as the GOAT of tv villains.

Walter starts doing everything for his family, so I see him as more of a Macbeth type to me.

And Gyp. He loved his family. He did.

Maybe Marlo is up there, but Chris genuinely cared about some of his people.

My answer is facetious. I do want her killed off more than the others though. In Game of thrones I find cersei as the most evil of the major characters.

How about gul ducat from ds9?

As someone who has a cat named after a DS9 character, that is a good one that I hadn't thought about.

He could be good, but almost never was.

Um, spoiler warning?

Just kidding. Livia is evil, no doubt, but Tony's evil resume ranks right up there with hers. She tried to have her son killed; Tony had his best friend, cousin, nephew, daughter's boyfriend killed, burned out his childhood friend's restaurant, f'ed over his wife eleventy billion times, for the sake of business / vendetta / temper without a second thought.

He was just a "sympathetic" character because he was a family man with anxiety and depression.

Marlo Stanfield for sure. He was jokeresque (though more vindictive, sadistic, and ****ed up).

Chris was just his loyal attack dog (I never did figure out how Marlo got people to follow him. Avon had the charisma, the family, and Stringer's mind. Yet Marlo had the best muscle in the game.) But yeah, Snoop was far more evil than Chris (though more heartless than truly cruel).

Walter does things for his family in the same way that Jimmy McNulty does his work for the City of Baltimore. His intentions are highly ambiguous, even from the beginning.

I think that what separates a Tony Soprano or a Stringer Bell from a Marlo Stanfield and a Livia Soprano is the inexplicable motivation of the latter two. Those two have unreasonable malicious desires with no understandable gain. Tony and Stringer did a lot of dirt, but for profit and personal gain. Their evil and greed was more sensible and understandable, whereas the other two were more thoroughly depraved. Amorality vs. evil I suppose.

Good explanation. You have given many good points.

I still think, and maybe it is because I am now a mom, that she is just ****ing evil. There is no redemption for Livia. She is evil.

This guy makes Livia Soprano look like Snow White.

^ was gonna say that too but as far as TV only, joff is up there

idk that i'd put marlo in the conversation, but chris and snoop could both be on the list - they were the real sociopathic sadists, not marlo

i agree with rolf tho regarding stringer and tony (though i'm much more familiar with the wire). stringer was a visionary who believed that he could revolutionize the institutions that he saw as a trap - all in all, he was actually one of the more admirable and complex characters in that show IMO

marlo and his crew were just emotionless, power hungry gangsters. it's like comparing tywin to joffrey/ramsay. i would never in a million years say that tywin was a true villain. but the other two? hell yes

I'd vote for Blue Duck from Lonesome Dove. Evil, sadist, sociopath towards everyone

Livia was evil towards Tony. And Janice. Not towards her late husband or Junior.

Phil Leotardo was pretty evil.

Tony was never pure evil. Maybe 60-40 split evil vs good. He did have moments of caring when his family was concerned. ** spoiler** when AJ jumped in the pool and Tony saved him and when Phil's goons were talking smack to Meadow and to see Tony retaliate.

is it fair to say Tony was kinda like JR Ewing?

both had their moments of evil. both were unable/unwilling to stay faithful to their wives even though they loved em. both are willing to walk over other people to get to where they wana be. both bully and intimidate. yet both at times showed a side that humanized them a bit and made viewers have sympathy especially when those moments came when they stepped outta their evil and did something good for others.
