Walmart pulls them from the shelves. Are these magazines considered porn compared to Playboy, Penthouse, etc.?

They're considered porn by Wal-Mart.

They're soft-core porn for "The Man Show" under-age crowd. They talk explicitly about sexual acts, but that's no different than what you could read in some woman's magazine.

While in Waldenbooks I have to at least check out who's on the cover. They do have great taste in who they get to pose in their mags.

I also got in trouble at work a few years ago venturing over to the FHM website through a link someone posted on texags. I was politely told not to go to sites like that again.

Wal-Mart loves to push their "family values" position. They wouldn't develop my Mardi Gras pics a few years back. They pulled the Godsmack debut cd off the shelves after someone complained (almost a year after it was released) that there was a naughty word in it.

But don't they still sell Kathie Lee dresses?

Maxim, FHM, Stuff have scantily clad women and have explicit content. Big deal. So does Seventeen, Cosmo and the women's mags.

Please Mr. Big Wal-Mart make my decisions for me and protect me from myself!

definitely not porn. if parents don't want their kids reading maxim, then why don't we let the parents deal with it. i've been mad at wal-mart ever since i bought a cd there and it was the "edited" version

Then don't shop for the mags at WalMart. Looks like Waldenbooks carries them, so there you go. And AFAIK, Target still stocks them. It's not like there aren't alternatives.[/rolling eyes]

I don't buy my mags at Wal-Mart or my cds, because I know that they think they have to make everything "G-rated". They still sell rated R DVDs and videos though. Right next to the latest Disney flicks. My point is I don't like it when corporations make it their business to decide what I should and shouldn't see. It's not just Wal-Mart. It's everywhere in our society now. Everything is so freaking sanitized. Probably why there's a whole generation of wusses growing up now.

I ask you all: Does this "Internet generation" really need to go to Wal-Mart and sneak peeks at Maxim to see nearly naked women?

It's nothing but a publicity manuever for the company. We're Wal-Mart... we care!

Not porn. I find it funny that the articles in Maxim are much more mature (more sexual) than those in Playboy. Even the pictures are often steamier, just covered up in certain spots.

Uh...I think if you knew much about Wal-Mart, you'd know it's not just a publicity stunt to them. And they've got every right in the world to carry, or not to carry, products as they so choose.

Uh... I do know about Wal-Mart.. .worked there for 4 summers during school. So why are they doing it? You think they honestly are thinking they're protecting the youth of America from this "filth"?

I won't buy anything at Wal-Mart because of their stance on censorship. If I have to shop at a place like that Target is the place for me, they're stuff is better too.

At some Wal-Mart's in other countries you can buy liquor. At Sam's Club you can but beer and wine. You can buy a whole host of tobacco products that will eventually kill you. You can buy a gun or knife to do it even quicker. A variety of clothing lines designed to make your 14 year old daughter look like a ***** are readily available.

But oh no, we can't have anyone looking at women in bikinis in a magazine, that'd just be wrong...

The solution is simple:

Do not go and spend your hard-earned money in the red-neck, children from hell, "we pay our employees crap" institution, known solely as Wal-Mart.

Why is this so hard to grasp?

You guys are idiots for thinking that a store deciding not to carry a certain product is cencorship.

It could very well be a good business move because many families do go to wal mart at various times of the day and shop. Sometimes children do venture off to the magazine area to read while the parents shop.

I believe it is just good business to know your market and cater to it. If their market was not food and family household items but was books and adult oriented literature, and then they decided to eliminate a certain product for your safety then that may lead to censorship but taking off a product that probably doesn't sell well (at least compared to their other products)and may inadvertently piss people off if they saw their kids reading stuff, they may choose to shop somewhere else. Like a competitor.

Censorship has nothing to do with a business carrying or not carrying a product. I doubt Wal mart really cares about your moral position outside of how it makes them money.

eh, Wal Mart still sucks

wal mart does suck

they carry everything I would need but never when i need it

How long do you want to ignore this user?
OK how do you explain editing CDs they carry when they're wrapped in plastic and kids can't just go up and listen to them, they have to buy them, with their parents. That throws your whole theory out the window.

Last time i checked, editing CDs was censorship.

Wal Mart does not edit CD's. Some record companies will produce an edited cut of some of their discs so that Wal Mart will carry it, but that is thier decision, not Wal Mart's.

Why single out Maxim and those like it though? There are plenty of other mags that show scantily clad women... the SI Swimsuit Issue, Cosmo, Seventeen, Rolling Stone (especially when Britney or Christinia are on the cover), Truckin' magazine with their bikini models, various motorcycle mags etc...

They're doing it because they know by doing so, it'll get media coverage and will create a sense of comfort and "Family" among their target audience - families.
Hong Kong Paul
How long do you want to ignore this user?
OK BigAg-

I knew that, i guess I should've been more specific, that's my bad but the point was they only sell the edited version and I just think it's stupid, why not sell them both like some places do? Basically it just comes down to the fact that I hate Wal-Mart with a deep passion.
BigAg95
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There is a big difference between "it is stupid" and "it is censorship."

does any one know what the Texas laws are on adult oriented material.

Is there laws stating what can be viewed and what cannot in stores of different types.

Further, are there internet laws prohibiting people from certain sites.

Now the obvious one is child porn, that is definately wrong due to the protection of childern from being victimized.

But what about other sites.

Further, then, what about children having access to public forums where adult oriented sites such as maxim can be seen.

Any word on what is and is not acceptable?

I don't think people really care about this. People shop at Wal-Mart because it's cheap, that's their target audience IMO.

Wal-Mart also stopped carrying Ruger Mini 14's and Mini 30's because they don't consider them "hunting rifles."
