So, Training Day is a kickass movie. I've seen it several times, and each time I seem to catch something new. One thing I can't figure out is why Denzel and Ethan go to Roger's house the first time? (Roger is the dude with the money stashed under the floor) They go there, drink some wiskey or something, listen to that snail joke, then haul ass. I'm not sure I understand Denzel's purpose of going there. It seems that everything else he does has a purpose, but I can't figure out the purpose in that scene. Roger seems to get a text or two and a phone call (says, "don't call me"), but I'm not sure what's Denzel is doing there. Anybody know?

I thought it might have been to size him up and see if he was home and without company.

That's what I assumed. Just casing him to make sure he lived alone.

Any relevance to the texts/phone call, you guys think? I assume that means that he is still dealing drugs.

Yeah, think you're right. That he is still dealing and most likely has his cash stashed at the house, too.

Training Day is one of my all time favorite movies, but I always wished they had given a little more info on who Roger was and what a bad man he was.

Wasn't he an informant for Alonzo? He would feed Alzono money and news about other dealers so he could operate with protection, right?

Was there ever a clue given to the audience that the money was under the floor? I can't remember any offhand. I figured they just knew prior.

If you pay close attention, you can see hints in the movie about what's to come. For example, after the "raid" you hear Denzel in his car saying over his phone about "cleaning the bathtub". Obviously he was talking to the Mexican dude who he hired to kill Ethan. I wonder if there is some other hint's like that, which I haven't caught yet.

I always thought Roger was a former cop who is/was a drug dealer.

yeah he was a former cop, that is why I assume he was allowed to operate under Alonzo's watch as long as he tattled on other dealers and paid off Alonzo.

Plus he knew about Hoyt's background as a football player, which I would assume one could more easily obtain as a former cop.

I think that was just to set up Ethan as a good athlete and able to handle himself. There are people who keep track of local HS athletes. Just go look at the recruiting board.

I have no doubt Roger was a poster/subscriber to Liucci's TexAgs Premium.

my guess is that Roger was the one who taught and mentored Alonzo when Alonzo was a young Narc.

Roger knew how to get paid and stay out of the limelight...ie pay the 3 wisemen.

He had to know the three wisemen also
