So basically an R-rated, more bloody Wild Wild West with a better script and better director and no giant mechanized spider.

I'll take it.

I love Tarantino, but can't stand Foxx. What to do?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Smith turn down the role of Neo to be in WWW?

Don't know if it was because of WWW, but yes he turned The Matrix down.

I'm glad too cuz Keanu was the bomb yo.

That looks freaking awesome. Can't believe Will Smith turned the part down. Well I guess I can, but he shouldn't have.

Maybe I'm not giving Will Smith enough credit, but I'm glad Smith turned the role down because I think Jamie Fox has a better 'dark side' which would seem to be very necessary for this role.

Can you imagine Big Willie Style saying the following in a trailer...

"Kill white folks and get paid for it? What's not to like?"

"I like the way you die boy..."

Will has made his career being the black guy that suburban whites love. Non threatening, but still has that "edge" that makes whites feel connected to the hip, urban side of America.

The guy never takes a chance, and he sure as hell wouldn't start with this one. Don't get me wrong, I like Will just fine and think he's always entertaining, but I think we're a lot better off with Foxx in this role. He plays "cool" really well, and this is a Tarantino flick after all.

He took a chance with Six Degrees of Separation.

Yeah, before he was Will Smith.

I agree with everything you said Sex Panther. Will takes safe, likeable roles. Nothing wrong with that, it made him the biggest star in earth, but I feel like we as fans are being cheated a bit by not seeing his full range.

And for the record, even before he was 'Will Smith' in 6 degrees, he wouldn't actually do the kiss, he made them use a weird camera angle do it looked like a kiss. Couldn't risk people thinking he was weird in the future.

Also for the record, I really like Will Smith, I'm not bashing him. Just wish he would venture outside the box.

But mostly I'm really excited about this movie. Looks incredible.

Yes, he took a chance in 6 Degrees and played the black guy that suburban whites love. Non threatening, but still has that "edge" that makes whites feel connected to the hip, urban side of America. And happened to be gay con man

BTW, why should he take a chance?

So in this 6 Degrees movie he played a gay?

I should clarify, I'm not bashing Will Smith. I like him a lot. He's always entertaining, he seems like a genuinely great person, and he's made a lot of really entertaining movies.

Clearly a long time ago, he or his management team began to carefully cultivate his image to what it is (including his music) and it worked out really well for him. He is one of the biggest stars on the planet (probably the biggest for a while), and he still reigns supreme in the Summer blockbuster department.

Maybe someday he will venture outside the box and take a side role in a Paul Thomas Anderson film or something similar. He may try to get an Oscar or do something totally different. Until then, I'm sure he's just fine with his career.

not sure if BMX is making fun of me or agreeing with me...

BMX: he's not obligated to take a chance at all. I just think he has the talent to take on more challenging roles if he wanted to, and I would love to see the result of those attempts. He's completely in his right to stick with successfully taking on entertaining, mostly funny/action/adventure roles.
Sex Panther

^Agree completely

I think he could be pretty good if he tried something different.
BMX Bandit

Agreeing with you. Kind of.

6 degrees was not a stretch besides the gay part. It was a black guy trying to fit in with rich white people.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think we are agreeing BMX. 6 degrees was his biggest stretch, but still not a big stretch.

Just to be clear, from 96 to ~05, Will Smith was undoubtedly the biggest, most profitable movie star on the planet.

And to be fair, other actors in his league haven't taken many chances lately either. (Hanks, Cruise, etc)
Sex Panther
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I dont know if you can say that about Cruise...

Rock of Ages (dudes gonna sing)
Tropic Thunder (genius role after all the backlash he was getting)
Collateral (grey haired straight evil hitman)
Vanilla Sky (head trip thriller)
Magnolia (artsy flick supporting character)
Eyes Wide Shut (orgies and kubrick)

But yeah he still does his Tom Cruise thing once or twice a year.

And while you're right Hanks hasn't taken risks lately, he didn't really need to after winning an Oscar for being a gay man in Philadelphia abd then following it up with Forrest Gump.

The better current comparison for Smith is Leonardo Dicaprio who is taking on his first villain role in Django, plus everything else he's done.

You're right about these, absolutely. Both great films, and great roles. Especially Magnolia. Not many would've taken that part.

Not sure I want him taking risks after Ladykillers. I'm happy to let him continue playing Woody in Toy Story 12.
