Was Stanley Kubrick murdered?

I watched Eyes Wide Shut and was looking at the IMDB message board for it afterwards. I was reading posts about the movie's connections to the Illuminati, among other things, and eventually came across this radio interview with a very well-studied Kubrick researcher. It exposes, on a much larger scale, what Kubrick was involved in, how all his movies were related and what they were "really about", and how it ultimately led to his death.

Obviously, a lot of you may find all of this a bit silly, but as a massive Kubrick fanatic I find all of this extremely interesting. Do I really believed Kubrick was involved in faking the moon landing? And that there are secret societies using mind control on beauty queens? Who knows. But this guy has done his homework, and he has pretty strong evidence towards some of his claims.

If this kinda stuff interests you, I highly suggest giving all four parts a listen.

Your answer should have been "No" not "who knows"

Me. Because it isn't real. I doubt there's much of a mind to control there in the first place.

I love this "Coast to Coast AM" stuff though. Cracked.com did an article on this kind of stuff a while back:

I love tin foil hatted conspiracy theorists. They bring me joy.

At the very least, this stuff is entertaining and it gives you a new outlook on each of Kubrick's movies.

Are we talking about Scientology?

Actually, many people think so.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are known scientologists.

Who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory? Personally, I love this stuff and find it fascinating.

The landing on the moon wasn't fake, it was publicized to cover up the true mission objectives. There was an alien robot that crash landed on the moon, and Niel & Buzz were sent in to investigate without the public's knowledge.

Michael Bay just recently released a documentary about it, maybe you should check it out.

"all his movies were related"

Please elaborate. How is the greatest dark comedy of the Cold War related to that pointless abortion "Eyes Wide Shut"?

First off, Eyes Wide Shut is a fantastic movie. Even if you don't particularly like the story, you have to appreciate the technical achievements of the film - the beautiful lighting, the amazing tension-building soundtrack, the long steadicam shot through the masked orgy sequence...the man was superb.

Secondly, I think the movie has way more stuff going on under the surface. One could see the how Tom Cruise's character could be a metaphor for Kubrick, for how he always felt like an outsider in Hollywood's high society.

If you've only seen the movie once, give it a few more looks. Kubrick's movies truly get better and better each time you watch them. Multiple viewings are a must.

An interesting note - Warner Bros saw the film just 4 days before his death and refused to let him release it as it was. After his death, they edited out quite a few scenes, obviously against his wishes. They have never made his original version available to anyone. (And they're rumored to be quite significant scenes)

I concur. Most people can't get past the orgy scene to see how great it was.

Buck:

At the core of every Kubrick movie is the dehumanization of man. In more cases than not, as we make advances in technology it is the advances that dehumanize us more: whether that is using a bone as a weapon, an H-bomb, killing women or children by not leading them as much, having sex with your wife's daughter, participating in orgies, randomly shooting members of a regiment for cowardice, reprogramming hooligans, etc., etc.

When you see people measuring their friends on Facebook and getting into arguments on Texags, I think maybe Kubrick was on to something.

His career was an arc down after Strangelove. Barry Lyndon, for example, had beautiful music, was beautifully shot and had great production values but had that hollywood idiot starring and was preposterous.

It got worse and Eyes Wide Shut was an abortion. Kubrick zealots will go on and on about what it was about and what the great man was up to but to most of the audience it was a waste of time.

If he wasn't murdered for making that film, he should have been.

HE was old, burned out, a virtual recluse and had turned off being human a good while back.

Paths of Glory is a great film, as is Strangelove but it was all downhill after that.

Huisache:

Full Metal Jacket was still on the up hill and as someone noted above needed multiple viewings to be truly appreciated.

You do point out the great irony in his life, a guy that innovated with machines in cinema and deplored the dehumanization of society, essentially lost the human touch himself.

Except his best movie came out in 1968, huisache. A few years after Dr. Strangelove.

This is how I would rank the Kubrick movies I've seen (roughly):

2001
Eyes Wide Shut
The Shining
Dr. Strangelove
Spartacus
A Clockwork Orange

Haven't seen the rest of his movies yet, so I can't compare to the rest. However, I do know that the top 3 movies on that list are some of my favorite movies of all time, and 2 of them were later in his career.

Bumping this thread. Multiple Kubrick ones on my search but this seemed relevant. Watched Eyes Wide Shut all the way through earlier. Interesting movie. Interesting to see Cruise in something like that too.

Great music in the movie.

I actually watched this last year. Enjoyable, if not one of his best, but still good.

Since this post I've watched Barry Lyndon, Lolita, and Full Metal Jacket. Enjoyed all of them to various degrees.
