I just noticed (in the "previously on" part for the second ep) that in the first episode that ed does use the term "The Others" when talking to Benjen Stark about what the man he executed said

Do the Others ever attack? Or is it just the Wildings army led by Mance Rader?

I finally set the DVR to start recording this show last night.

One question before I start reading up on it though. What would you compare it to? So I kind of know what I'm getting into.

Yes there are a few Others attacks later on.

This is also a no spoilers thread, those last couple posts might be giving a bit much away.

i just wanna say real quick that i'm impressed that a non-reader picked that up from the very brief mentioning of Mance

I would describe it as a cross between Lord of the Rings and the Sopranos. Thats the closest I can get its not completely true because its several families vying for power and while there is magic its not in your face. There maybe some adventure aspects its not an adventure story. Its more a drama then an adventure story but its not just a drama.

Watched the one I recorded last night. Seems interesting! Is this the first season? If not is the first season on DvD? I hate trying to watch a show that I didn't start at the beginning because it's always jumping back and forth.

Haha, honestly I read Aragon as maybe being Celtic or dwarf or something for "season". God I've watched/played too many fantasy movies/games.

I've read three books in the series.

Some more backstory that hasn't been mentioned very well in the series...

Regarding Robert's assumption of the throne after the rebellion: Robert Baratheon's great grandfather was one of the Targaryen kings, so he had a better claim to the Iron Throne than any of the other warring houses.

A few questions:

for the book readers, how closely is the show following the book(s)?

Is alot of the dialogue in the show exactly as in the book?

How far into the book series is the show?

What is the deal with the dragon eggs? Are they just so sacred cause dragons are rare, and do they keep them as pets, or is there some kind of supernatural power within them?

PatAg

So far it is very similar to the books, in pacing and style. Some lines are lifted right from the book, notably Littlefinger's one liners.

The dragon eggs are presented as just being exquisite jewels that are rare by the guy that was keeping Dany and viserys.

Also, season 1 should just be scenes from Book 1, although I could see them having some scenes from book 2 potentially.
Karrde

Dragons are believed to be extinct, the dragon eggs are like dinosaur eggs would be to us, but even rarer.

The series is very faithful to the book in the dialogue and events. Some minor characters in the book were combined with other characters for the series (example, Jory Cassel in the series combines Jory Cassel in the book with a few other members of the Stark house guard) or eliminated altogether. Some scenes are not in the book, but use dialogue from other sections to help fill in the back story. These extra scenes have been written so well that they easily could have been "deleted scenes" straight from GRRM. One interesting and disappointing change is that the direwolves are a much bigger part of the book than the series. The scene with Robb and Bran being ambushed in the forest, for example, had full-on direwolf carnage in the book. I guess HBO does have limits to how much blood and guts(!) can be shown per episode.

By the time of the events in the books, dragons have been extinct for the past 200 years or so. The Targaryen king who was on the throne when the last of the dragons died was referred to as "The Dragonbane." The three eggs that Dany was given as gifts are the last ones left. One might well ask how Illyrio could have afforded such a priceless gift, and from whom he obtained them, and why. ;-)

So in the book, the wolves did all of the killing and not Bran's brother and Greyjoy? Or they helped and the wolves contributed to killing some of the people? How did that play out in the book?
G Martin 87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The wolves did most of the killing, with Robb assisting. Theon ended the fight. Robb was able to secure Osha's cooperation by threatening to let the wolves have her. At that moment, Summer was still feeding on one of the Wildlings.

What's the significance of Dany not being burned by the eggs? I know they have the dragon as their symbol but does each houses symbol give them some type of power?
G Martin 87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Difficult to answer that without spoilers. Let's just say that the best is yet to come. As for the sigils themselves, they don't bestow any magical powers.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
So wolves killed those guys. And there was a lot of blood and whatnot? Is that the big change?
JJxvi
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The "fire cannot harm the dragon" quote is mostly just fantasy tale mysticism, even if it an unusally heat tolerance exists in Dany.

Its similar to "Oh these Stark's have the direwolf as their sigil and all have a weird bond with a wolf they found"

Its not necessarliy a family trait, as the books end up giving backstory on some rather loony former kings and princes who did some very stupid things, one of which drank a substance kinda similar to lamp oil and combusted.

is osha the female attacker of bran that was left alive? If so, im guessing she is an important recurring character since you know her name?
JJxvi

Reading the books you get pretty much every speaking character's name.
G Martin 87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The name of the Black Watch deserter who had the knife to Bran's throat was Stiv. He does not reappear in the future.

so tell me about these dragons.

What should we expect from season 2, what direction we going in and are the supernaturals going to be a bigger part of the storyline? I imagine dragons will, what about the white walkers?

I can tell its going to get real good but its just moving too slow for my liking.

More action/combat next season? Magic? Winter?

I am going to try to stay away from spoilers.

Well magic becomes stronger when Dragons are in the world but the magic will still not be in your face.

Yes there will be some of those.

Second book is called a Clash of Kings so I would assume there will be more action.

Winter?

Early to mid-fall.
