I know absolutely nothing about this series, but the trailers are pretty cool. I'm looking forward to it.

stive - that's awesome to hear. i'm a huge fan of the series and i've been pretty curious to see how those who haven't read the books are responding to the trailers.

i think they're doing a fantastic job of marketing to both groups

In the books, they are closer, but they used older actors for Robb, Jon, Sansa, and Dany (because even HBO would not dip to child porn)

Is anyone else curious to see which of the many of small subplots get featured? Because if they are going to have to edit it for length (because they can't shoot the book verbatim) then I suspect that we may get an idea of which subplots are important to the later story and which ones aren't going to go anywhere. Martin can't cut a character or scene that will be crucial to the plot down the road.

For example (this isn't a really subplot but a pretty critical plot point, I would think): Lyanna's bed of blood. Which Ned remembers in detail in a (written) flashback - although the detail is in his head, and not spelled out on the page. It's a very important memory, but how do they film that scene without making it kind of clear just exactly what's going on?

Anyway, I'm curious about stuff like that. And very much looking forward to the series.

This may have been posted elsewhere, but Martin has almost finished A Dance with Dragons. Its set to be published this summer. And that's supposedly a hard date.

jenn - as far as your example goes, if R+L=J ends up holding true (and the consensus among fans seems to be that it will be confirmed at some point, probably if/when we ever meet Howland Reed), i do hope they put that scene in. in fact i'd be disappointed if they took out/changed any of Ned's flashback from the Tower of Joy, but that's also because that whole exchange between Ned and the three kingsguard is one of my favorites in the series

this is looking ahead of book 1, but i could see them maybe leaving out some of Arya's misadventures with the BwB, just because there are a LOT of very minor characters introduced that will just bog down the show.

and to the above poster, yes there's been a hard date given, July 12th. i'm assuming that GRRM is close enough to finally being finished that the publishers are giving this date as a deadline to him as much as it is a release date for us. but that's just a hunch

so, im 60 pages into book 1. i need to hustle if im gonna finish before this thing airs. im stoked.

I'm 300 pages in myself and I'm wondering if the first season is supposed to only encompass the first book? I imagine it does and I'll finish the book before the series begins but if it is supposed to start up with book two at some point I'd like to know when to stop watching.

You're safe man...season 1 is only the first book. Theoretically book 2 would be season 2, so on and so forth.

yeah season 1 is gonna be 10 one-hour episodes ending with the end of book 1

i think season 2 discussions are already happening, though i've heard that GRRM has been quoted as saying that he thinks book 2 should be done in 2 seasons just because of how much happens

Amazon has a box set of the first 4 books for about $25. I ordered last night because I couldn't find any of the books past GoT at Half Price Books.
