If you had to choose one....

Breaking Bad
Dexter
Sons of Anarchy
Mad Men (I've seen a few episodes and thought it really slow)

Sons of Anarchy, hands down.

Dexter was great for its first two seasons, then kind of dropped off in quality during its third season.

Breaking Bad is really good, but I don't find myself eagerly anticipating each episode, instead waiting for the entire season to come out then watching them all back to back.

As for Mad Men, I've never understood why people got into this, maybe I need to watch past the first couple of episodes, as I also found them to be unbearably slow. I've never really been all that interested in shows that take place in a business setting, and I think the 60's were a particularly uninteresting decade.

Your Mileage May Vary on all of these opinions, but I'd highly suggest watching Sons of Anarchy first, especially since the new season starts tomorrow.

Mad Men is not an action series so it is not going to move fast. Also, you have to watch the whole season to understand the story arc, not just periodic episodes.

I can see why it might not be interesting for millenials.

SoA is entertaining, but pretty predictable. the writing is a joke next to Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

i like all 3 but would go with BB first.

Breaking Bad. Very entertaining. I'm now on the 3rd season of Mad Men, and while interesting, I do found it rather overrated.

Never seen Sons of Anarchy, but it looks pretty dumb IMO. Dexter, I never found too good.

Depends on your timing- you are 26 episodes back on Sons of Anarchy. If you've got some marathoning time on your hands, you can knock through them in a few weeks, DVR the ones that start this week, and be in real time pretty soon.

SOA an excellent show, and underrated because it doesn't get a lot of talk. I just burned through S2 myself to get caught up to watch S3 live. The subject matter is going to keep it from ever being as "critically acclaimed" as some of the others, but I'd really put it in the top 5 dramas currently airing with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Friday Night Lights, and a placeholder for Boardwalk Empire. It's a slight step down from the AMC shows, but still up there. You may not quite see that in S1, because there are a few aspects where it's a little shaky, but it exploded into a top-tier show out of the gates as S2 started. (Worth noting that Kurt Sutter, the creator and showrunner, was one of the top guys in the writing room on The Shield. There are a lot of common fans between those 2 shows.)

Almost anyone who watches Breaking Bad will tell you it's one of the best- and most people tend to prefer it over Mad Men. It's got more adrenaline pumping through it than Mad Men. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul put up some of the best performances on TV for 3 years straight. It's not a flashy show, but its damn good week in and out. I'd put it behind SoA on the list of what you should view, because there are only 33 episodes at this point, and you have until next June to knock them out before S4 starts. Another case where the 1st season of 7 episodes is good, but not great, but keep plugging because it hits its stride with the start of S2.

The things you hear about Mad Men being slow aren't exaggerated. It's "artsy" TV. It's not for the folks that were still watching the last season of 24, for instance. If you can adjust to the pacing, it's probably the most complex drama on TV. Occasionally I wonder why I enjoy it so much, and then an episode like the one that aired last night comes on that reminds me of just how well done it is. Tough to explain why it's so great- but most anyone who watches it will tell you that you do need to convince yourself to keep pushing on in those early episodes, but if you do, you'll really appreciate it. Top notch writing, great acting, seeing that era depicted with such detail is really cool...but the pacing is unlike anything else you'll see. Often reminiscent of those "weird psychological" episodes of The Sopranos.

I don't think Dexter belongs in this conversation. It was a decent show the first couple of seasons, S3 was pretty terrible. Apparently it got better after that, but I had long since quit. It's highs aren't nearly as high as these other 3...save it for when you are done with them.

I've watched Dexter, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad all in the past few months. Well, I am still working on BB... but moving very quickly through it.

I like all three a lot.

Dexter, quality-wise, is not as good as the other two. Acting, aside from a few roles, is not great and the writing can be a bit amateurish at times. But it's extremely entertaining and it's easy to watch 4-5 episodes straight on DVD. S3 was weak, but S4 was arguably the strongest season.

Mad Men is an acquired taste...you really need to give it 5-6 episodes I think to appreciate it. Great writing and acting.

Still working through Breaking Bad and I love everything about it. The acting and writing so far are phenomenal. I've only started S3, and I question how long this show can really go on...but so far it's probably my favorite of the three. It will grab you within the first 1-2 episodes and the consistency so far is remarkable.

Never seen SoA, maybe I will check it out next.

I would vote Breaking Bad #1 with Mad Men a close second. Mad Men is slow, but once you get into it and relate to the characters, you'll be hooked.

Breaking Bad is outstanding. Great action, acting, dialogue, plot twists, etc.

Just to add, I would rate Breaking Bad in the second tier behind The Sopranos and The Wire.

4 of my favorite shows currently on. Dexter is far behind in terms of quality, but I do find it enertaining and addictive.

I'd probably put SoA slightly ahead of BB, but it os very, very close. BB is better acting and probably better overall, SoA just does something more for me. You can't go wrong with either (or any of the 4).

Hung is a very weird show. You can see where the show has immense potential, but it never really reaches it. I like Thomas Jane, but I'm not throughly impressed with the rest of the group.

I'm going to give it till the rest of this season before I possibly drop it.

You can't go wrong. I'm catching up on Mad men.

Dexter is good the first season, but progressively goes downhill.

Haven't seen SoA, but probably will get to it after I catch up with Mad Men. I think I'm about 9 behind now.

Breaking Bad is genius.

I agree...Hung is awful. It had the potential to be really great, but it's just not.

I'm looking forward to Boardwalk Empire.

SoA, BB and Mad Men are all excellent shows and I'd probably rate them in that order of my preference. Walking Dead looks like it could be badass and Boardwalk Empire should be excellent as well. As others have said, the first season of BB and SoA aren't as polished, but the second seasons really shine
