Is he even playing country any more? He's playing this weekend and Pimpadelic is opening. Seems like an odd bill otherwise.

When I was younger, I went to see him play (and had no idea what he looked like at the time).

After a while, I asked my buddy when David was going on stage, because I was getting tired of the mumbling drunk dude who was apparantly opening for Coe.

Turns out, that drunk unintelligible singer was good ole David Allen Coe.

I know she thinks it's time.

But hands off your little sister,

'Cause she's mine."

What's amazing is that they can still find venues that will let them play.

I saw him play at Midnight Rodeo in Waco in probably '97 or '98. It was the loudest concert I have ever been to - and not for reasons you'd think. He was playing a Steve Vai-style Ibanez guitar through two 4x12 stacks, and it was all clean; no distortion, and he just strummed it like an acoustic guitar. I guess the old guy can't hear for sh*t anymore because it sounded like the amps were on 11! The sound guy couldn't fit the house sound around DAC's guitar. It was painful.

Similar story in Chicago. Friend of mine from West Palm Beach that lived in Chicago at the time went, on my suggestion, to go see DAC at some ruff & tumble joint.

My friend shows up in his finest city clothes at a REALLY ruff biker bar. He ventures in (with date) and sidles up to the bar, orders drinks and starts to pound them down. Old, nasty biker sitting next to him joins him shot for shot for over an hour. All three (old nasty biker, WPB friend and date) get hammered together.

Announcer says, "please welcome David Alan Coe" and old nasty biker finishes his last shot, says "nice talkin" then heads to the stage, grabs guitar and starts wailing away.

My friend had no idea old nasty biker was DAC.

Ha -- never thought I'd see Pimpadelic mentioned on texags? Old friend of mine's from HS had an older sister that used to hang out with a couple of them in the mid-90s. I never cared for them or their music from what I remember, but the name Pimpadelic always suck with me.

Anyhow, how is DAC still alive?

I have a good friend that spent an evening with a friend of hers who was DAC's "main beotch" for over a year. My friend hung out with DAC and the friend all night including a heavy drinking session on the tour bus.

My friend said that DAC is absolutely disgusting and has a spider tatoo on the most painful place I can ever imagine getting a tatoo.

I saw that tatoo in Hustler magazine, but I thought it was a Dragon?

Your friend's sister is most certainly in a sex tape by now.

DAC is a fairly odd stage presence. Just kind of stares blankly into space while he strums his electric and growls.

There are some Johnny Rebel songs that get confused for him but he also had two ablums with some pretty awful stuff.

Quoting this old post because I worked in a music store in Odessa in the early to mid 90s, and he and his band were playing in Midland and rolled into the store. We had an Ibanez Gem in stock that we called the Wedding Guitar. All white with intricate tree of life inlay down the fretboard. And of course the Steve Vai handle. DAC saw it and bought it without even plugging it in. I wonder if it was the same guitar (of course I'm sure he may have had others).
