This is my face for this thread.

I almost posted this same exact list with Leo added. So I'll add it now.

Ok, now you're obviously trolling. You can argue as to whether or not Leo deserves the level of praise he gets around here, but to compare the guy to Diesel is absurd to the level that I've decided you're not being serious on this thread.

Leo added. These guys get way more work than they deserve.

I'm not comparing.

this thread is laughable. leo is probably one of the top 4 or 5 right now. scorcese wouldn't keep picking him if he wasn't.

I don't dislike hime as an actor, but I absolutley refuse to go see any of his movies in the theater, because I had to sit through th eaborotions of both Romeo and Juliet and Titanic while dating in high school.

Now I just wait for anything of his I want to see to come out on video.

Honestly I thought Leo was great in Titanic. You don't have to be a huge fan of Titanic (I'm not) to see that he did an admirable job in that movie. He was very believable being the poor immigrant falling for the rich (but unhappy) girl. He made a mushy role tolerable for the guys and awesome for the girls (I assume).

What has Leo been bad in? Again, I think his less than rough exterior (boyish looks) hurt him more than anything about his acting ability.

The title of the post was so bewildering because I consider Leo to be one of the top 5 actors of his generation and one of the top 20 out of all the male actors.

Again, the fact a guy like Vin Diesel can make millions of dollars in the movie business is a reason to throw some hate in that direction.

My prediction is that age may do Leo some favors down the road to give his face more character. I also think he will be one of the best actors overall if he is still working in his 40s and 50s.

Following the love fest hangover from Titanic, I refused to watch anything with DiCaprio in it.

I was sick at home and decided to go through the movies in our collection for something to prevent me from having to sit through daytime tv. I picked out Blood Diamond despite the fact that it stars Leonardo (I focused on the fact that he is carrying a machine gun on the cover and said what the hell). I was amazed at how good he was in it. Following Blood Diamond, I decided to watch The Departed (another movie my wife added to our collection that I refused to watch due to his inclusion).

Following the Departed, I stopped my childish hatred of Leonardo DiCaprio (which I admit was primarily based on my lableing him as a pretty boy) immediately.

He is an amazing actor.

For the record I've never refused to watch a film because Leo was in it. I still leave open the chance that he can improve.

I'm still waiting.

You've predetermined that he sucks. Just like I did. You may not be ready yet to see that he is good. You may change.

Until then, many here are waiting.

He gets a clean slate every time I see him in a new role.

May not be ready? I've seen him in movies. He hasn't delivered. It's not like I can watch The Departed and Gangs of New York over and over and all of a sudden his acting will improve.

Haha. I'm sure everyone is at the edge of their seats to hear my opinion on Leo but I do say thanks.

His next movie is Shutter Island. I will be seeing it. Clean slate and all.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing his role in Inception.

You are correct.

I've spoken for many that I don't have the right to when I said that many will be waiting.

I apologize to anyone who thinks that I have spoken in haste.

Back to Maroon Tank: I am not the least bit curious if you do recognize his talent or not. If you do, then good on you. If you don't, then stop watching his movies. It worked for me for years!

i'd go so far as to say that i don't think he's ever been the lead in a bad movie, except for The Man in the Iron Mask, but even Tom Hanks makes the occasional "Aristocrats".

This Boy's Life and The Basketball Diaries were phenomenal movies.

Wow. I don't see that at all. In fact, that's one of my biggest issues with that movie. That character was not believable at all. Completely anachronistic.

I liked him in Catch Me if You Can and, someone else mentioned it, This Boy's Life.

But he was really awful in Titanic. Not sure how much of that was his fault. It was a bad script--just Winslet and him yelling each other's names over and over and over again. And I think it was a lot of bad direction. He was in that movie to be a teenage heart-throb. And it worked.

"And here's the deal on the Blood Diamond accent: I don't know what a real Afrikaner accent sounds like. I have a rough idea, and Leo's was supposedly pretty rough as well, which is fine for that movie's primary audience, of which 99.9% have no idea what an Afrikaner sounds like either."

He was playing a Rhodie, not an Afrikaner.

MAROON TANK,

Please list some examples of actors you think are better than Leo that he would likely be competing with for roles.

This thread is useless without those names.....

This thread is hysterical. How many 35 year old actors have ever had the body of work he has at this age?

Titanic hate.

Why has this thread gone on for 3 pages? Are people really taking this post seriously?

Even if it's not a troll, it's really not worth the argument. Dicaprio is one of, in not the best actor of the past few years. What one person thinks is not gonna change that.
Old Main
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Exactly my point. I thought the whole thread title was a joke. If you look at his body of work and assign a ratio of good movies to bad movies (and good acting performances to bad acting performances) I think you will find very few actors of his generation (or even overall) will have a ratio as good.

There's no real way for me to do this. How can I tell how an actor would portray a character?

Competing with Leo for roles:

Matt Damon, Marky Wahlberg, Jake Glyenhall, Tobey Maguire, Vinnie Chase..off the top of my head.

What Rudy said, quit being dense and avoiding the question. When a role comes up, there is a target age range/look/demographic that the character will fall in to. Of those guys, which ones are better than Leo in his slot?

I stand by my statement. Who is to say they would do better or worse?

I'm curious who you consider to be good actors. My current top 4 is probably:

George Clooney
Brad Pitt
Leonardo DiCaprio
Matt Damon

Having trouble coming up with a 5th that I'd group with those. Maybe Will Smith or Robert Downey Jr.

Tom Hanks?

I was the same way as a poster above. I had an irrational dislike for him due to Titanic. Started watching his movies objectively and he is really good. I think it was on Inside the Actors studio, though I could be wrong on that, but DiCaprio said he felt his worst career move was taking Titanic because it typecast him as the pretty boy for so long. The role he turned down and wished he had taken instead of titanic was Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights. Would have been really interesting to see people's opinion of him if he had made that choice...

Clooney doesn't belong on that list, imo.

Jude Law deserves consideration because of his range.

I think he also gets dismissed as something of a "pretty boy," but look at his performance in Road to Perdition as a believable, creepy hitman, and contrast it with his role in The Talented Mr. Ripley as a carefree playboy. I even didn't hate him in All the Kings Men, an adaptation of one of my favorite novels set in a part of the world with which I am very familiar.

DiCaprio was either up for or turned down the role of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He would not have been as good as Christian Bale.

That's a 2-way street. I'm not sure that Christian Bale would've worked in Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond, The Departed, or Body of Lies.

Then again, I'm getting a little tired of Christian Bale at this point. I think TDK and Terminator overloaded me on Batman voice. Don't even remember what he was like in Public Enemies.

It's on my list of worst films ever made. There's a freaking ANIMATED VIDEO GAME sequence in it. I don't get why people think it's such a good film.
