Scorsese could have found better.

For each Scorsese film, do we know that Leo was the first pic?

I don't have a problem with any of the other actors Martin has in his films. Just Leo.

I thought he was really good in Blood Diamond and The Departed and liked him in The Beach.

Maroon Tank, did he F@@@ your girlfriend or something? You're spewing some hate here.

I think he's one of the best actors out there.

You might like his directing, but you and Scorsese clearly haven't differing opinions on what constitutes good acting. I side with Scorsese.

Really, really big fan of Leo...

I even liked him in The Quick and the Dead.

Great film. Should have won an oscar.
Gene Hackman's acting made up for Leo's lack of.

I should have thought of The Aviator, I actually bought it. He is brilliant in that.

You know why you didn't remember The Aviator? Because Leo's acting did nothing significant for you to remember it.
Ulrich

Yeah, that's totally synonymous with what I said. I didn't think of it because I didn't look at my DVDs or think about it very long... it is very nearly a one man show, and I bought it because it was a great performance.

But congrats on being really strongly against something popular.

I thought Alec Baldwin was good but not that good in it.

He did suck in Growing Pains, but other than that he has been a pretty good actor.

basketball diaries was pretty good. Blood Diamond very good (accent was actually pretty good), The Departed excellent, the beach good

Funny I Leo's been up for a few Golden Globes and Academy Awards yet MaroonTalk thinks he's a horrible actor.

good actor. just think he's a bit overrated on this board. i also think he's miscast in some movies.

while he did a good job in gangs and departed, i would have rather seen other actors in those roles

Funny how Leo has never won an Academy Award. Plus those Academy judges don't know jack.

Thank you dreyOO. You see part of my view.

Like who, Drey? I'm not trying to call you out, just I actually think that's a much more interesting conversation than "DiCaprio sucks".

FWIW, I think he's grown a lot, but he still tips his hand too often. He appears to be "ACTING" [/Lovitz voice] far too often even in his good films. But, when he is on he's more than just above average - he's really good. So what if it takes a great director to coax it from him. Is Tom Brady less of a QB because he has a good coach? Or do the accomplishments speak for themselves?

I want to see a list of actors you actually think are good. It must be pretty short because Leo is definitely above average. Is this just a personal thing against him or do you just get upset every time an actor doesn't make you forget you are watching a movie and that it is all make believe?

GAngs of NY and in Departed, Leo's portrays characters that are also acting and deceiving the people they know,

this is doubly-difficult

Leo didn't deliver on the acting but Scorsese delivered on the deceiving.

That's what I'm saying.

I think Leo is a top notch actor. He seems to get a bad rap sometimes just because he was in Titanic. Other times I think he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves because he looks more like a boy than a man right now.

The Beach is one of my favorite movies and I thought he was great in that. The critics thought he was great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries. I'm not sure if he has been below average in any movie he has been in. He also chooses roles wisely and I think this is often overlooked. Give him credit for being in Martin's movies. There is a reason he is cast.

I suggest hating on actors like Vin Diesel, Keanu Reeves, and Nicholas Cage. These guys get way more work than they deserve.

I'm actually laughing. I almost posted this same exact list with Leo added. So I'll add it now.

Ok, now you're obviously trolling. You can argue as to whether or not Leo deserves the level of praise he gets around here, but to compare the guy to Diesel is absurd to the level that I've decided you're not being serious on this thread.

He's not trolling.

I think it's the voice. It makes him sound like a ***** and is so noticeable to me that I can't buy him in any tough guy role (75% of his work).

Maybe not a horrible actor, just horribly miscast.

While I guess we don't KNOW for sure, I'm thinking the answer is probably yes.

I think DiCaprio should have won an Oscar for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Tommy Lee Jones was good in The Fugitive, but not Oscar good.

I'd throw in Marvin's Room as another good performance of his. Great small film with a great cast.

I think his biggest weakness is he still looks and sounds pretty young, so some people just can't take him seriously.

boykin, that's why i'm not a casting director!

it's easy to criticize, but i really don't know. someone less refined...someone brawnier or more of a ragged look--maybe some (gasp) imperfect teeth. i'm not suggesting to value a look more than acting prowess, but i think you could have both pretty easily. i think too often they go for big name actors to plug in (makes sense, it guarantees a gate) when they should be looking for the best fit

Norman Reedus might have worked for departed. i've never seen the show, but i've been told prison break is good. i just googled a guy on that show (dominic purcell) that looks more like what i would have expected to see in the departed also. assuming the boy can act of course...

I thought his performance in Gangs of NY was excellent. He was right up there with DDLewis.

And personally, I thought he was great for that role. He was not the normal tough gangster guy, and I thought that added to the part and the movie.

I also think Blood Diamond is a great movie, and he did a very comendable job in that movie.

I, too, forgot about the Aviator, and I also think he was very good in that as well.

I think the OP on here is just a troll. Nobody can hate on Leo that much.

Maroon Tank is obviously trolling, but I'll play.

Had a hard time taking DiCaprio seriously for a long time b/c of his goofy kid role on Growing Pains, and later because he was such an androgynous little teen girl crush.

However, like Ro828, I caught This Boy's Life on Cable one day and was blown away.

The Aviator was strong and The Departed was instant classic. Only recently watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and it was a pretty incredible performance for an actor that age.

The role in the Departed was not that of a classic tough guy, but a neurotic loner who just happens to have the right last name and he was pretty perfect.

Can't stand the dude's politics or personal values, but he's one of the best working actors today. And it isn't exactly ground-breaking insight to suggest that great directors like Scorcese get the best out of their actors.

I think Steven Seagal is a better actor than Leo. Leo is good in Grapes, but tries too hard in all other movies. Anytime you have Jack Nicholson in a movie, chances are its gonna be good.

In an acting contest with the dog from Frasier, Steven Seagal comes in a distant third. Leo is nowhere near as bad as Seagal.
