Leonardo DiCaprio is a horrible, terrible actor

and it angers me that Martin Scorsese keeps giving him work. After Shutter Island he'll be in Scorsese's Teddy Roosevelt movie. Christopher Nolan has also made a film with Leo in it. Good thing that Nolan's great directing will overpower Leo's acting.

The ONLY film that DiCaprio has done legitimate, good acting was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and that's only because the role came so naturally to him.

I thought he was good in Catch Me If You Can.

I disagree. I think he is an above average actor. Liked him in The Departed; Gangs of New York; Catch me if you Can; The Beach. Others as well.

You all might be mixing up the quality of his acting with Scorsese's good directing. 80% of the movies you've named are Martin's films SO FAR.

He held his own just fine against Nicholson in The Departed & he was good in Blood Diamond, that's not Scorsese.

I couldn't possibly agree more. I'm shocked this guy is considered to be not only a good actor but one of the best actors working today.

He ruins virtually every movie he's in (exception being Catch Me If You Can...never saw Grape).

Damn you River Phoenix for getting caught up in the 90's...you should have had this guy's career.

oh im gonna pwn you so hard maroon..

catch me if you can: he was good
the departed: he was good
the beach: he was pretty good
blood diamond: he was good
revolutionary road: started getting kind of old because his "style" hasn't changed much
shutter island: to be determined...

I thought he was great in Catch Me and EXCELLENT in The Departed.

Despite some craptacular ventures, the guy can act.

He's a great actor. When he was a young unknown he played Robert DeNiro's stepson in THIS BOY'S LIFE and completely blew me away. I saw it on cable, and called Mrs. Ro into the living room so she could see this awesome young actor.

That said, a performance is a combination of an actor, script, and director. I didn't see REVOLUTIONARY ROAD because I'd read the book and considered it worse than a soap opera.

If you think his "style" is consistently the same, try a double feature of WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE? and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. You'd think these were two different actors.

I think he's a great actor. I'm glad Scorsese keeps using him for his work. He's Scorsese's present day De Niro/Keitel.

He's going to be a horrible Teddy Roosevelt.

The dude is, at LEAST above average. I personally think he's a good actor.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, he was good in all of those. I'm a champion basher of schmucks like Keanu Reeves, but I gotta give Leo props, he's got real acting chops, and I like the guy's work.

I think he's a very good actor. Probably not the best working today, but definitely above average. What I can remember seeing him in:

The Departed
Gangs of New York
Body of Lies
Catch Me If You Can
Blood Diamond
The Beach

I'm not sure I'll like Shutter Island, but I probably won't see it anyways, and that has nothing to do with the casting.

South, he was speaking some sort of pidgin English in the scene you posted. Are you an expert in that dialect? Unlikely.

And here's the deal on the Blood Diamond accent: I don't know what a real Afrikaner accent sounds like. I have a rough idea, and Leo's was supposedly pretty rough as well, which is fine for that movie's primary audience, of which 99.9% have no idea what an Afrikaner sounds like either. So it doesn't matter. Bringing in someone from South Africa who says "OMG that's so bad!" doesn't matter to 99.9% of the people who watched that film, because they have no point of reference to make it annoying to them. For a counterpoint to that, Sandra Bullock's overwrought fake southern accent in Blindside IS annoying, because I'm from a southern family and know the real deal.

Oh yeah, AND the Aviator. He was great in that movie and I can't believe I left it off.

That's pretty much my take. I'm not too picky when it comes to actors/actresses and their accents. It can be really hard to fake an unnatural accent, so any reasonable effort usually gets a pass in my book.

Her accent wasn't great, but it might depend on what your frame of reference is. She lives in Austin, so I don't think she'd need to try too hard to put on a southern accent. The movie was set in Memphis though, and their "southern" accent is much different from what you get in Texas. I don't know enough about Tennesseeans to comment on how good/bad she was.

And she was 100% M1LF in that movie, so I can forgive her for the accent.

Edit: Can't say M1LF? wtf.

MaroonTank

75% of the movies that you all are giving him credit for are Scorsese films. Martin makes him look good because Martin makes a damn good film. They'd be even better without Leo.

You can pinpoint Leo's bad acting every time he gets angry in The Departed. You can also pinpoint it in Gangs of New York every time he gets angry or tries to act passionate about something. He CAN NOT act.

I have a theory that Scorsese got wasted one day and accidentally signed a 10 movie contract with DiCaprio.

Yes.

I don't hate the guy. He just can't act.

What makes me angry is that he continues to be in Scorsese films when he shouldn't.

Why?

You might like his directing, but you and Scorsese clearly haven't differing opinions on what constitutes good acting. I side with Scorsese.
