And the Ewoks from Jedi are universally derided as well! They're a big reason why people bag on Jedi. You can't defend Jar Jar by saying "Lucas has made bad decision before." It doesn't make Jar Jar any less terrible to point out that the worst of the original movies also featured annoying "cutsie" alien characters that Lucas invented for their merchandise potential. The only saving grace one has when considering the Ewoks is that they must have been mostly wiped out by the debris falling from the exploded second Death Star.

Lucas deserves a ton of credit for the archetype mashup that was Episode IV, and for the foundations of that story, but it was one of his producers (name escapes me at the moment) that was on board with IV and V, but then kicked to the curb, that kept the movies from devolving into what later episodes became.

Lucas is given to wild flights of fancy and creative impulses that lead to garbage on the big screen. Starting with Jedi, Lucas had nobody helping to hold the reins, and he only surrounded himself with Yes Men who told him his ideas were great.

The departure of this producer (again, can't recall his name and I'm on my phone so I can't check) led to BIG changes in Jedi, namely Luke and Leia being siblings, Ewoks instead of Wookies, a new and humble post-carbonite Han not sacrificing himself to destroy the Death Star. Those all represented the beginning of slide in quality.

I think it's safe to say if George had died, Episode 1,2,3 would've been about 11billion times better.

Speaking of Jar Jar....

I'll never forget that scene in Episode 1 where the little robot that he accidently activated in Anakin's house suddenly kicked him in the crotch. That still has me rolling.
