Does anyone happen to know who was the first to use "Hold up, wait a minute ... "? And, what was the original next line?

Late 80's I think.

A friend asked, and I had no idea.

"hold up wait a minute dont go there cause i aint wit it"?

Late 90's, not 80's, but there is a song from 24k on the Dangerous Minds soundtrack -I dug it out of a box the other day to listen to Gangsta's Paradise - that says the above.

Thanks for thinking about it, but that is not it. The phrase is commonly used in rap/hip hop. I'm looking for a pretty early usage.

Wasn't it still called 'rap' in the 80's?

I always thought it was a Fat Man Scoop sound bite. Don't remember if there was a full song or not.

Probably not right again, but...

"Hold up, wait a minute, put a little love in it"

Lyrics

I don't recall ever even hearing that song.

ehhh...modern version...

"Say hold up, wait a minute. Lemme put some pimpin' in it."

I think it was an original "call and response" with the crowd at a club. The dj or mc would stop the music and yell out "hold up" and response "wait a minute" and then the music would kick back in. So with that history, rappers tend to drop that in their songs.
At least this is what I remember...

I'd rather light a candle than curse your darkness

Apache,

Rapper's Delight, which I would call the first mainstream rap starts off with "I said a hip hop...", so the term was definitely around even in the 70's. That being said, I never called it anything but rap.

From Wikipedia:
Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five has been credited with the coining of the term hip hop in 1978.

the entire movement probably started in the early-mid 70s with dj kool herc. afrika baambata get most of the credit for coining the term "hip hop" which probably originates from b-boying or break dancing.

the term was definitely around before rappers delight, which i think came out in 1979.
