Anybody else really like this movie? I know it's a bit touchy feely, but I like it.

I've always felt this was one of the more underrated movies out there. I think lots of people kind of turned their nose up towards it because they felt it was too much of a chick flick. But I'm a big fan of it.

I love the scene when he comes out to start the eighth and has no idea what's going on until he looks at the scoreboard.

I've never considered it a baseball movie. It's a love story set at a baseball game.

If it had just tried to be one or the other I might have liked it.

I really like the movie. I love when he doesn't realize he was already pitching perfect into the eigth and then the catcher (John C. Riley) tells him that they are the best team in baseball right then.

Good movie!

I always thought it would be one of the greatest sports movies ever without the love story. I want to see it edited without the love story.

I think a writer pitched this movie as an aging pitcher pitches a perfect game, and then retires. Throughout the game he has flashbacks to former players and instances in his life. Then a studio exec reads it and says "Add a love story and we'll make the movie."

I liked it a lot. Yeah, the non-baseball/Preston scenes aren't great...but I always felt it really conveyed the feel of the modern game better than any other movie.

i liked it, and i'm not a baseball fan by any stretch.

the love story does get a bit old after a while though.

i liked it. i too wanted the love crap removed, but honestly, it's only 45 min movie if that's the case. there would have had to be some sort of other plot going on...

i'm of the belief that it's still a "guy" movie but it has just enough girlie stuff that you can keep your date involved and happy. good enough for me.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I liked it. The "love" story part was played up a bit, but the movie was about his life and she was a big part of his life. The baseball part is great though.

GREAT movie. Course I was also a pitcher up through college so I am biased to a good ball movie like that.

It is based on a book by Michael Shaara (The Killer Angels (Gettysburg)). It's on my shelf but I've never gotten around to reading past the first chapter. I believe that the book has the love story, though.

Not a bad movie. I've always like the part where the guy who had the ball bounce off of his head as a younger player makes a great catch to preserve the perfect game. I think the character Chapel had told him to walk with his head up and to not let the media make a fool out of him.

the love story is kind of annoying.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
uh..no Randi. The player that let the ball bounce off his head was on the Yankees during the perfect game. Chapel, playing for the Tigers, struck him out to continue the perfect game.
SJEAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, Randi's right. The player who had the ball bounce off his head was a younger player who was still playing with the Tigers...the one Chapel struck out was more of a peer he was friends with earlier in his career who went to the Yankees. They looked similar I guess, but they were two different characters in the same game.
jeffk
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Correct. He struck his friend out to continue the perfect game.

Great movie.
victory
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah..you guys are right now that I think about it..it was his friend that he helped move that Chapel ended up striking out. It was a younger guy that went Jose Canseco in the outfield.

If we're going to argue about a baseball movie shouldn't we discuss the merit of Lou Brown putting a red tag in Gentry's locker during Spring Training in Major League?
Was Rexman's wife really out dancing with another guy wearing her underwear on his head?

I really, really like this movie. Whenever my friends and I made trips to other colleges, we always called the girls we were going to see as 'Janes'.

Top 5 baseball movies:

1) Field of Dreams
2) Major League
3) For Love of the Game
4) The Sandlot
5) Bad News Bears (the original)

uh..you cannot have a best baseball movie list and not include Bull Durham in the top 5

so would kostner be in 3 or the top 5 baseball movies?

and you can NEVER leave off The Natural.

Um, to me it is. More like 'life in baseball' than any other movie I listed.

Granted, I forgot the Natural...put that at 2 and knock BNB off.

Investor,
I'm sorry but that is horrible list for top baseball movies
You cannot have a top 5 and not have
The Natural
*61
Bull Durham
Eight men out
My other in the top 5 would be field of dreams
I thought for love of the game was good...but now way in top 5 baseball movies...maybe not even in top 10
Someone mentioned above it was a baseball movie with just enough chick stuff to keep the girlf interested in the movie...IMO it was the other way around...a chick flick with just enough baseball to keep the guy interested

*61 was pretty good, but had a little too much of a TV-movie-of-the-week feel to it. I appreciated it's accuracy (as far as I know, I think Crystal put a lot of research into it) and thought it was casted quite well. Was just missing something though, IMO. Zero desire to ever see it again, which eliminates it from my top 5.

My top 5

1) Field of Dreams
2) Major League
3) The Natural
4) For Love of the Game
5) Eight Men Out

Bull Durham barely misses the cut, don't think I enjoyed it like most...maybe because I despise Susan Sarandon and her part is way too big to get past it.

A previous poster is correct, the movie is based on a book by Michael Shaara (who won the Pulitzer for 'The Killer Angels').

I've read it, though it's been a few years. The romance was part of the story, but they made a bigger deal of it in the movie. Also, in the book he pitched for Atlanta.
