How long do you want to ignore this user?
I really liked this movie.

Not one of the all time mob movies, but I liked seeing Tom Hanks in a different kinda role.

Great movie. Jude Law was great too.

I heard it had some plot holes, but still an Oscar Contender.

This movie was awesome. Not really in the same league as the Godfather, but I think it was up there with some of the other "great" mob movies.

Tom Hanks was excellent, and so was Paul Newman, as was the kid.

Plot holes?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Plot holes is funny because when we left this movie, I told my husband, "This movie was better than most of the movies we've seen lately because they resolved everything and there wasn't anything really extraneous in there..."

What were the plot holes?

I can't think of any off the top of my head either Karen.

The only things I've discussed with friends is that Jude Law was non-existant for a long period of time while Sullivan pursued the Rooneys and the total lack of police presence. Not even sirens in the distance.
Not that I think these things hurt the film at all.

spoiler:

when the Jude Law character disappeared for a while I thought that it was possible that he was gone for good, under the idea that the people who were paying him were dead and he lost his incentive. Some movies I've seen recently (ahem, Minority Report) might have handled such a character that way. This would have made it not as good of a movie though, because supposedly he'd be motivated by his facial injuries and his sick photography hobby. So I hoped we'd see him again, and was glad when we did. The only thing I wondered was about the golden retiever that came running up on the beach...it didn't really make sense that the dog was still alive. Although it arguably wasn't a very good dog given its lack of involvement in the last altercation.

Also warning

As soon as I saw the dog I knew we hadn't seen the last of Law and was excited. I did find it strange that Sullivan honestly believed Capone would allow him to run his course of vendetta through the ranks without repercussion regardless of the actions of Conner Rooney. Why then would he go to the one place Law knew he'd be?

yeah, yeah, spoiler, warning, warning...

see, when I saw the house, I thought, this is where Jude Law is going to be. But then I saw the dog and thought, maybe not. I just don't see why he wouldn't have killed the dog, except that it obviously turned out to be a pretty compliant creature, but Law wouldn't have known that. That's a little nit noid I guess, but it did seem strange to me. And, you're right, I wondered why Sullivan would think he could go to Aunt Sarah's unless he didn't realize he hadn't killed Law (forgot his character name) in the hotel room.

When the kid was hoeing the field with those farm people I knew he was going to end up there. And bringing the dog with him was a nice touch.

Good movie.

No real plot hole response? The only extraneous story line I can think of is the old couple and to be honest, I thought it worked well with the script.

I thought it was a great movie as well, and like the others, sure don't remember any plot holes.

As for Law's character....did you guys really think he was gone? There was never a question in my mind that he would return to kill Mike. As soon as Mike entered the house and was gazing upon his now "peaceful" life through the big window, I knew that's where he'd die.

One "con" comment I'd like to make though echoes one from above....no cops in the movie (except for the one who gets shot in the diner). The guy is on a bank robbing spree, with a kid driving the car...plus, a contract killer is following him around ....pretty conspicous to say the least.

The only part I don't understand is why Mike didn't make sure Jude Law was dead before he left the accountants room. He knew he was hurt, but he didn't know how bad. He could've killed him and then pretty much gotten off scot free with killing the others because Law was the only one who knew where they were going.

you can't be serious

having hanks and newman did not save this crapfest. not that it was terrible, just nowhere near the billing and the jocking here.

Seriously Proctor, what were your beefs? I was just curious. I don't think you are the kind of person that just says they don't like something to be the devil's advocate.

Hundreds of old cars -- I guess most were computer generated. Great photography. Also good sound effects.

beefs? - that's too strong. i said it wasn't terrible, just that i found it to be a boring story. [i know i used the word crapfest which was a bit strong] in addition, hanks's character was totally unsympathetic, including his kid. i didn't care if the whole lot got gunned down by each other or the cops.

plot holes - i don't care. [law's gunning down the policeman outside the diner was silly - leaving all those witnesses. capone taking the time to remove money from the banks when he should have had goons waiting for hanks instead at every one.]

i want to be entertained at a movie, especially one being billed as the year's best film. it just didn't live up to the hype.

i was more entertained watching corky romano.

I went and saw it Friday night. It was a great movie. Even though I was sure Law was going to reappear. I really liked the actor who played Micheal Sullivan (his son). He did a great job.

I was a little bored with it myself. A pretty good story but it lacked depth to me. It served as good entertainment while I ate my popcorn.
